Bellringer:
How did Mesopotamians get
water from the Tigris and
Euphrates to water their
crops?
Activity/Materials:
This activity will begin with a presentation to
introduce the students to material and allow them
to ask questions they may have. Students will
receive a packet containing the following:

Learning Target:
Students will understand the
basics of agriculture in
Mesopotamia (e.g.
domestication, and irrigation)
Homework:
None
Assessment:
Students will be assessed
based on the completion of the
water supply activity worksheet.
Modifications:
Students will be filling out
vocabulary and big ideas as a
whole, and will be working in
groups on the activity.

Activity/Materials:
In this activity the students and I will be discussing
the Cause and Effect of the development of
agriculture in Mesopotamia. The students will be
given a handout so that they can label the causes
and effects. We will be having an open discussion
during this time which will lead them to the
understanding of how a stable food supply lead to
the development of permanent housing, and how
that then led to the beginnings of a government.

Students will understand the
effects that agriculture had on
the development of certain
factors that create a civilization
(e.g. housing, stable food
supply, and government)

Cuneiform letter activity if not
completed in class.

Trivia:

Learning Targets:
Students will understand the
basics of Sumerian religion.
Students will identify the
plot, characters, and events
in the Epic of Gilgamesh,
and produce a comic strip
following the series of
events.
Activity/Materials
This activity will introduce students to various
aspects of the Sumerian religion, and will be
having them discuss the relation between
these aspects and their daily lives. (Students
will be given a graphic organizer to record the
various aspects)
The students will also be looking at various
temple structures that were created for
religious purposes in ancient times.
The students and I will then begin to take a
look at the Epic of Gilgamesh, and
comparing Gilgamesh to some comic book
heroes they know today. (Students will be
given a mind map to record the story plot,
characters, and events)
Assessment:
Assessment will be based on
the completion of the graphic
organizers/mind maps, dealing
with religion and Epic of
Gilgamesh.
Modifications:
Students will be filling out
graphic organizers/mind maps
as a whole, and will be creating
a comic strip in pairs.
Trivia:
Will be assessed each
morning.
Homework:
None

ideas about Mesopotamian
geography, agriculture, and
religion in order to prepare

the number of correct answers
on the given quiz. Also, their
comic strips are to be turned in
and assessed on the number of
images, the amount of effort
that appears to have went into
creating the strip, and whether
or not the strip follows the plot
of the Epic of Gilgamesh
