Lesson 2
Lesson Topic: The Rise of Big Business
Purpose:
The purpose of this lesson is to inform the students that industrial growth
gave rise to big business, and turned the United States into the most
economically powerful country.
Background:
This lesson will serve as an introduction into the history of big business that
still exists today. This will also allow students to see some of the tactics
people used to gain economic advantages.
INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES/ STUDENT OUTCOMES
How did big business shape the American economy in the late 1800s
and early 1900s?
What is a corporation?
Why would monopolies be bad?
How is a cartel different from a monopoly?
STRATEGIES:
Students will write for 10 minutes about what they learned in the lecture
After writing the students will share what they have written with a partner

Video: Andrew Carnegie (just to break up the flow and give them some
enrichment about one of the persons in the lecture/lesson)
Closure:

Discuss quickly thoughts on the video
Review main points from the lecture, ensure they have them in their
notes
Take up the writing assignment, no grade, just to see if the followed along
with the lecture and got some of the big ideas out of it.

EXTENDED ACTIVITIES
If Lesson Ends Early
If the lesson ends early the students can begin reading the next
section in the textbook, or we shall extend the discussion at the end.
If Student Finishes Early
They should spend the entire time writing, they will be asked to
write more if they feel they are finished. If they cannot come up with
more Ill ask them to gather a few points from the textbook.
If Technology Fails
After reviewing the writings I will have an overall census of big ideas
gathered and missed, I will use the ones that they missed to
incorporate into the beginning of the following class to review and
check for understanding.
