Lesson 2
Lesson Topic: The Rise of Big Business
Purpose:

The purpose of this lesson is to inform the students that industrial growth
gave rise to big business, and turned the United States into the most
economically powerful country.
Background:

This lesson will serve as an introduction into the history of big business that
still exists today. This will also allow students to see some of the tactics
people used to gain economic advantages.
INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES/ STUDENT OUTCOMES

Students will analyze different methods that business used to


increase their profits.
Students will describe the public debate over the impact of big
business.
Students will explain how the government took steps to block
abuses of corporate power.

State Objectives:

Today I am going to give a lecture with a slideshow, you will want to


take notes, because after the lecture we are going to do a writing
assignment. I want you to get out a sheet of paper. Then spend the
next ten minutes writing as much as you can recall from the lecture I
just gave, or pick one thing out of the lecture that really interested you
and write what you learned about it, and how or if you think it is still
relevant today. After that we will be partnering up, you will share with
you partner what you have written, they will share what they have
written with you.

EXTENDED ACTIVITIES
If Lesson Ends Early

If the lesson ends early the students can begin reading the next
section in the textbook, or we shall extend the discussion at the end.
If Student Finishes Early

They should spend the entire time writing, they will be asked to
write more if they feel they are finished. If they cannot come up with
more Ill ask them to gather a few points from the textbook.
If Technology Fails

If technology is not available, the lecture will follow the textbook,


the video on Carnegie will be scratched, but I will share a few things
about him with the students.

After reviewing the writings I will have an overall census of big ideas
gathered and missed, I will use the ones that they missed to
incorporate into the beginning of the following class to review and
check for understanding.
