Description of Lesson: Students will read an article about manatees being
removed from the Endangered Species list. Students will interpret the cause
and effects using textual evidence. Students will read aloud and asked
questions concerning the text. They will use a graphic organizer to list the
causes of the effects of each textual scenario. They will then be given a
multiple choice assessment that we will work on as a class. As their exit slip
to leave class, they will asked to write a paragraph using 2 pieces of text
based information to support their argument of whether the manatee should
remain or be removed from the Endangered Species list. Students are
expected to turn in their paragraph with 80% mastery.

Cross Curricular Connections: Will help students draw conclusions using
cause and effect in classes such as math, social studies, science, and any
other class that draws off of informational texts.
Instructional Objective(s) Criteria:
When given an article, students will take turns reading aloud and interpreting
cause and effect relationships in the article. Students will analyze cause and
effect in a nonfiction text about manatees being removed from the
Endangered Species List, students will interpret cause and effect
relationships. Students will produce a paragraph with 2 pieces of text
evidence stating their opinion about manatees being removed or remaining
on the list. Students are expected to complete paragraph with at least 70%
accuracy
Assessment(s) of the Objectives: Students will have class discussion
and participation by answering questions that the teacher writes on the
board. Then, they will be given a multiple choice assessment to ensure they
comprehend the text. Students will go over the answers with the teacher and
clear up any questions they need answered. Students will be given a prompt

and expected to deliver their opinions about the text and back up their
argument using 2 pieces of text evidence. 80% mastery is expected.

Materials/Resources: pencils, paper, reading material, PowerPoint, and
SmartBoard. PowerPoint will be used to draw graphic organizers by
SmartBoard technology.
Prerequisites (Prior Knowledge): The following prior knowledge is
expected: compare and contrasting skills and paragraph development.

Procedures:
1. Pass out article and assessment questions.
2. Call on readers per paragraph.
3. Ask questions about text and make notes about important facts.
4. As a class, create a graphic organizer and interpret the cause and
effects of the text.
5. Begin assessment.
6. Go over assessment.
7. Assign writing prompt as exit ticket.
Students will take turns reading the paragraphs out loud. Students will be
chosen at random, being sure to equally take turns between different races
and gender.
Accommodations: Students will not need accommodation for this lesson.
Since this lesson will be done as a class, there will be neither early finishers
nor late finishers. Being an honors class, there are no students whose level is
too low for this activity. The student who has help in reading, knows to raise
his hand if he needs help reading a passage.
