Right after Mersault s arrest, he remained calm and even questioned why he needed
to hire a lawyer...Foreshadows his indifference during the trial and his placidn
ess during his trial.
p63, Then he wanted to know If I had hired an attorney. I admitted I hadn t and inq
uired whether it was really necessary to have one.
p69, He sat indignantly. He said it was impossible; all men believed in God, even
those who turn their backs on him.
This foreshadows the belief that there are truly some atheist in the foxhole. Ev
en when he was going to become executed he still did not forgive his sins and be
lieved in a God with the chaplain. This scene foreshadows his religious beliefs
and destiny.
