WEEK 3 LESSONS
Kindergarten/Grade 1:
Pitch Exploration activity: (1-2 min.) Find your family *1.1, 1.5
Objective: To increase the vocal range of students, and to develop pitch exploration.
Procedure: Assign each student an animal cow, cat, dog, horse, or crow.
Have students vocalize their assigned animal so they can find others in the
class who have the same animal.
Once students have found the others who belong to the same animal group,
have them vocalize their animal one more time as a group.
Modification for Week 3: After students find others of the same animal group, have them
hold hands and find a corner of the rug so they do not
continue to run around the room.
When students are demonstrating their animals, make sure
they are only demonstrating the sounds, not the actions of
the animals.
Differentiate between high and low animal sounds.
Movement Exploration Activity: (2-5 min.) Listen and Move *5.1, 5.5
Objective: To get students up and moving while also increasing their musical listening
ability.
Procedure: Use a percussion instrument, or drum sticks.
Tell the students to only move around the room when they hear sound
coming from the instrument.
Have half of the class move when they hear the instrument, and the other
half move when they do not hear the instrument being played.
Movement for Form and Expression without recorded music: Ready for a nap *5.5
Objective: To have the students actively engaged while acting out the poem with
their fingers.
Procedure: First read through the poem without the actions.
Do the poem again, this time with the finger actions.
Teach students tricky sections.
Perform it once more with the students.
Could extend to twins?

Movement for Form and Expression with recorded music: Trumerei (Kinderszenen Op. 15, No. 7) *5.5
Objective: To have students be able to express a piece of music through body
movements.
Procedure: First demonstrate all of the moves that are needed for the piece of music.
Perform the exercise with students watching closely and immitating the
moves that you do.
Select two Marvelous Movers.
Steady Beat Activity: (2 min.) Indiana Jones (Theme) - John Williams *5.1
Minuet in G Major J.S. Bach (12 beat?) *5.1
Objective: To develop the students' abilities to maintain a steady beat during an uptempo classical piece.
Procedure: While playing the each piece, have students mimic
as you keep a steady beat on different body parts.
Songtale: (2-3 min.) Let's Go to the Woods *1.5, 5.6
Objective: To get students engaged while they develop their ear training and vocal skills.
Procedure: For the first run through, perform by yourself.
On the second run through, have students join in on repeating sections.
Questions: What are some of the questions that are asked during the songtale?
Summarize in your own words.

Grade 2:
Teaching Kids to Sing: (5 min.)
Energize the Body: Exercise 1A Set 1 *1.1
Objective: The student will learn to prepare the body for singing, using exercises for
stretching, limbering, and invigorating the physique.
Procedure: Perform the stretches and shakes that are provided in this set.
Spinal Stretch, Shoulder Roll, Head Swing, Knee Flex, Left-Right Shake.
Energize the Breath: Exercise 6A and 6B (Two-Finger Movement, Slow Sip) *1.1
Objective: The student will learn to breathe from the diaphragm, using exercises for a

proper cycle of exhalation and inhalation.


Energize the Ear: Exercise 14A *5.6
Objective: The student will learn to accurately hear and remember pitch, using exercises
for pitch perception and tonal memory.
Procedure: High or Low?
Play one note between middle C, and an octave above (higher or lower).
Tell students to hear the pitch in their mind (audiate).
Play pitches again and have students echo on the syllable loo.
Signal with thumb up if second pitch is higher, or signal with thumb
down if the second pitch is lower than the first.
Energize the Voice: Exercise 18A (Animal Farm) *1.1, 1.5
Objective: The student will learn to sing with greater vocal resonance, using exercises
that emphasize uniform vowel and diphthong production, pharyngeal
depth, and projection in the mask.
Procedure: Animal Farm:
Have students sample an animal with a low voice (duck, bear).
Have students sample an animal with a high voice (owl, kitten).
Have students sample an animal with a high and a low voice.
Listen for best imitation and have students echo this student.
Energize the Song: Exercise 32A - Wibbleton to Wobbleton*1.1
Objective: The student will learn to sing quality song literature with clear and effective
diction and expressive interpretation.
Procedure: Practice the nursery rhyme slowly at first, incresing the tempo as they get
more comfortable and better at the articulation.
Pay attention to the t in both of these words (it should not sound like a
d)
Speak on pitch do not drone.

Call and Response Song - Swing Low: *1.1, 1.5


Objective: To help students achieve the capability to perform call and response songs
comfortably.
Procedure: Sing this song for the class.
To work towards singing individually:
Have group echo the leader.
After song is familiar, have students echo a phrase.
After this is comfortable, select solo singers.

Simple Song - Oh When the Saints Go Marching In:*1.1, 1.4, 1.5


Objective: To encourage independent singing from children while they assimilate the
whole song.
Procedure: Sing song for the class (possibly while students do a motion).
Students should not sing during this time.
After a couple times, the whole group is invited to sing without the teacher's
assistance (if they are still unsure, sing it for them a few more
times).
When the whole group knows the song, invite students to sing by
themselves (could award those who make soloist attempts).

Grade 3:
Teaching Kids to Sing: (5 min.)
(Same as 2nd grade).
Green Binder Songs: *2.2, 2.3
Objective: To give students an understanding of how to follow along with songs that
are new to them.
Procedure: Put the songs on the projector at the front of the class so you can explain
how to follow the songs.
After the students seem comfortable, encourage students to follow along
with their finger in their Green Binders (with their partner).
Have the partners switch roles for the second playing.
Lines and Spaces worksheet: *2.2
Objective: To give students an understanding of the lines and spaces on a treble clef and
to be able to distinguish them from each other.
Procedure: Provide ways of being able to distinguish between lines and spaces on the
treble clef.
*Use Note Trainor or Note Name Game to reinforce the lines and spaces
with the students before handing out the worksheet.
Small Recorder Group Lesson: *2.1, 2.4
Objective: To provide students with extra help on the recorder who are struggling to
keep up with the rest of the class.
Procedure: Review basics of the recorder to the students in the small lesson.

Grade 4:
Teaching Kids to Sing: (5 min.)
(Same as 3rd grade).
Teach Musical Roadmap for Twinkle and drill Descending D-Major Scale: *2.2
Objective: To provide students with the rest of the notes needed for the descending D
Major scale (E and F#).
Procedure: Introduce the two new notes on the recorder (E and F#).
Practice doing the scale as a class in its entirety.
Have volunteers perform it by themselves.
Practice running through Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.
Small Recorder Group Lesson: *2.1, 2.4
Objective: To provide students with extra help on the recorder who are struggling to
keep up with the rest of the class.
Procedure: Review basics of the recorder to the students in the small lesson.
