GENRE PRESENTATION

By Kathy Lewis

LEARNING A NEW GENRE

My approach to learning any new genre would be to use the tools I have
now been taught by Professor Zameni.
Say I want to learn how to write a History paper;
I can look for information in my books the St. Martins Guide To Writing or
the Writers Brief Handbook. By looking in the index I can quickly see if
the information would be located inside.
I can also use the Cal Baptist University Library for research. Now that I
have had the chance to start using it I feel much more comfortable
gleaning information from it.

REMEMBERED EVENT
The story I chose from the Bible was Moses Parting of the Red Sea
It has all the elements of a Remembered event:
A Well-Told Story
A Vivid Description
Significance
A Well-Told Story - God chose Moses to take the Israelites away from Egypt and
far away from the slavery they endure. When they left the Pharaoh and his
Army follow them and trapped them at the Red Sea. Moses, being the man of
God and with a belief so strong in him, raises his staff and parts the Red Sea,
thus freeing the Israelites and causing the demise of the Pharaoh and his Army.

REMEMBERED EVENT
Vivid Description This is prevalent is this story.

he took six hundred of his best chariots, with officers all over them
they marched out boldly pursuing the Israelites
they overtook them with chariots, horsemen and troops
the pillar of cloud also moved in front and stood behind them
the night cloud brought darkness to one side and light to the other side
the Lord drove the sea back with a strong east wind and turned it into dry land.
the waters were dividedwith a wall of water on their right and on their left.
the Lord looked down from the pillar of fire
stretch you hand over the sea so that the waters may flow back over the

Significance
When Moses believed in the Lord, he knew he had the power to take care of the Israelites. Once the
Israelites believed in the power that the Lord had given Moses, they were saved by his mercy. As a true
believer Moses delivered the Israelites to freedom.

PROFILE
The story I chose from the Bible for this was the Story of Job.
It has all the elements of a Profile;

Detailed information about the subject

Clear organizational plan
A role for the writer
A perspective on the subject

Detailed information about the subject - Job is a man of strong religious beliefs and follows
the principles of God. He has the wealth of a good family and a good life because of his
service to the Lord. When God takes away all of his worldly possessions, his faith does not
waiver, he still believes in him. In the end, Job is rewarded for this continued faith by being
blessed with an even greater life.

PROFILE
Clear organizational plan We are taken on a journey through Jobs life in a
narrative form. The use of descriptive words abound in the trails and victories
of the Life of Job.
Writers Role I believe our role in this story is a spectator as we are taken
through the life he lived. We feel both the greatness of Jobs belief, as well as
Gods grace in this story. In addition, we are left feeling saddened by his trials
with the loss of his family, and riches, and in the terrible suffering he must
endure during this story.
Perspective on the subject My take on the perspective of the insight in the life
that Job lived. This was established through the tales of his trials and the
rewards for his belief in God which manifested in the end of Jobs story.
