Intergenerational Program
Theme: Making New Friends
Date of Activity:
September 24th 2014
Program Purpose:
The purpose of this program is to introduce the CLS participants to the
Head Start program children, and allow them to establish new
friendships and relationships.
Client Characteristics:
There are currently 7 clients in the CLS program who have all
experienced a stroke recently, and have varying side-effects from the
stroke.
There are approximately 8-10 Head Start children between the ages of
3-5 that will be participating.
Clients to be involved in the program:
All CLS clients and Head Start children.
Program goals and measurable objectives: Minimum of three client
focused goals and related objectives.
1. CLS participants will be introduced to Head Start children
a. Participants will go around in a circle and say their name with a
movement of their choice. Everyone else will replicate the
movement while saying Hi (participants name)
b. CLS participants and Head Start Children will partner up
2. CLS participants will work on fine motor skills when beading friendship
bracelets
a. Participants will have to utilize both sides of the body to
complete this activity
b. Participants will have to place beads and other decorations on
the pipe cleaners
c. Participants will be using and strengthening specific intrinsic
hand muscles that will be isolated when beading onto the pipe
cleaner
3. CLS participants will work on cognitive skills
a. Participants will use memory recall to respond to statements
based on previous/current friendships or relationships.
b. Participants will comprehend and reflect on the statements
presented
Program Description:
1. Welcome: Children come in and sit on their mats. Insure
5 minutes nametags are on. Participants are sitting in a semicircle

2. Storybook A Book Of Friends

3. Story is Read
Clinician/participant will read a short storybook. The children &
participants will be encouraged to follow directions as given in
book.
Children & participants will be assigned a station.
4. Transition from story circle to the stations
5 minutes
1. A group to Cognitive Activity
2. B group to Red Station Physical Activity
A student clinician will stand in front of the cognitive motor
station with a blue penny on, and will have the children line
up in front of them while the clients get seated.
A student clinician with a red penny on in the physical station
will organize the children and clients into a circle with their
buddies. Facilitator will help to coordinate where each person
should be standing.
5. Activity Time:
"A Station Cognitive Activity: What Makes a Good Friend? (1015 mins)

The student clinicians will have each client and their buddies
seated side by side (if there are two buddies then one should be
seated across the table).
The student clinician facilitator will secure the groups attention
by stating, Eyes watching, ears listening, voices quiet, and
bodies calm.
Once everyone is seated and paying attention, the student
clinician facilitator will explain the task giving simple, efficient
directions and show an example of the finished product. Each
student clinician will be responsible for any further need
explanations of the task to his or her participants.
Description:
Participants will be paired with Head Start children (note: some participants
may have two buddies) and each group will be given a Happy face and a
Sad face. Harmony will explain the activity to the participants and children.
Students/Participants will hear a series of statements, and after collaborating
with their buddy they will decide whether or not they believe that statement
is a good or bad characteristic of a friend. They will continue to make these
decisions until its time to switch activities.

"B Station Physical Activity: Friendship Bracelets (10-15
minutes)
The student clinician facilitator will secure the groups attention
by stating, Eyes watching, ears listening, voices quiet, and
bodies calm.
Once everyone is in the circle and paying attention, the student
clinician facilitator will explain the task giving simple, efficient
directions.
Description:
Participants will be paired with Head Start students. Participants and
students will be explained the concept of friendship bracelets.
Students/Participants can make as many bracelets as time permits and
exchange bracelets with a new friend. Bracelets will be made from pipe
cleaners and beads.
Supply List:
Note: List the supplies necessary for the activity and provide detailed
directions on how to run the station.
All supplies are available at CLS!
-Turn lights off then back on to signal change to next activity6. Closing
minutes

Once all groups are done, everyone will gather in the main program room to
sing the song, The More We Get Together or the Goodbye song and
shake hands Good- bye to participants.
Total Program Length: Approximately 40-50 minutes for the session. Will
need to monitor endurance of participants during this program for future
planning purposes.
Staffing Requirements:
At least one staff member will be needed to facilitate each transition
between activities. Each participant/child pair will be given assistance
by at least one speech therapy and/or therapeutic recreation student.
Method of evaluating programs value and worth:
A debriefing session will occur with all students and participants at the
conclusion of the program. The participants will be asked to share
their experiences of the session. Participants will be asked what
part(s) of the program were successful (define successful) with the
children, as well as what areas/activities were not as successful.

Suggestions and ideas for improvement will be noted. The assigned


students in charge of developing the program will complete a postsession report form.
