Journal Number: 8

Practicum Week: Eight

Date of event: 3rd April 2015
Title of journal: Schools sports day

1. Problem/Event
On 30th March 2015 to 3rd April 2015 is the schools sports day and I was involved as
the schools marching band conductor.
2. Analysis
I have been appointed as the schools marching band conductor and videographer for
the schools sports day. As a teacher I must be able to guide my students to become
a good role model and to be active in sports. According to Gardner, Roth and BrooksGunn (2008), participation in organized activities during high school is positively
associated with educational, civic, and to some extent, occupational success in young
adulthood. Morrissey (2005) stated that there is an established link between
adolescents' extracurricular activities and educational attainment as adults in
occupational choice and income. Morrissey also noted a reduction in delinquency and
less engagement in risky behaviours. These factors explain why students should
balance their lives with academics and activities as participating in these well-rounded
activities may impact their success in the future.
3. Actions taken
a) As a teacher, I must be able to encourage my students to be participating actively
in any extracurricular activities in school.
b) I must also be able to motivate my students to be active in any activities that they
participated.
4. Time Allocation for Action
I will try my best to focus on students that are involved with schools activities
immediately.
