Migration trends

1. Mobility is a change in residence whereas migration is a permanent or semipermanent change in residence crossing an administrative boundary.
2. With a history of movement and immigration, movers show that mobility is
greater than migration because they have broken the ties with their old home and
once they do that, it is easier to do again and again. After dong it once they find it
much easier to do again. They also are people that just travel a lot whether for work
or for play. They are exercising the mobility part. and it happens on a very frequent
basis showing that it is easier then migration.
3. Emphasis on freedom and that the us has the highest rate of people with cars
and also that they have very generous programs for people that migrate into the
country to help them get their feet off the ground.
4. More dual career households, a higher level of homeownership and improved
intra-urban mobility encourages people to substitute commuting for changes in
residence. It is easier for them to move closer to work thane to drive the distance to
work.
5. Low mobility is associated with stability and a strong sense of place. High
mobility is associated with weak place ties, weak sense of community, high rates of
divorce and suicide, and low levels of charitable giving.
6. Information about other places, national and regional labor markets, or they can
afford to move. Basically they see greener grass somewhere then where they are.
They also have the funds available to move and they are more likely to move to find
a job that requires their education.
Global Migration
1. Growing inequalities, increasing demographic pressure, the end of the Cold War,
and increasing ethnic and political strife.
2. Switzerland has the issue of some of it people becoming very anti foreigner.
Being the country already has so much diversity they people are getting worried
about more foreigners coming in and they are starting to protest. Middle eastern
countries have an issue wit the radical religions and the fact that most people want
to stay away form that part of the world.
3. Italy and Spain. They need immigrants to be able to open the gates for other
countries and let more money flow in.
4. Mine workers need work. It brings migrants who experience drought. Civil war in
Liberia causes people to flee. Civil unrest also in other countries has also made

people flee to other countries. Africa is a continent of refugees because it contains a

lot of open land and unstructured areas where people will not be prosecuted for a
belief.

5. United States.
1. Migration stream: NY to FL. The most concentrated population of people retire
and go to warmer climates to enjoy their retirement. WE see many northern
workers move to the south or out west when they retire especially the ones
that have mad large sums of money.
2. Counter stream: FL to NY because the retirees werent satisfied with their
location. Some people that move to warm climates realize that the climate is
not for them and will move back to where they came from or someplace like
it.
