Haley Wilson
Student Teaching
TWS #10
Communication Plan
A) Family communication: To communicate with the parents of my classroom, I sent
home a letter to not only introduce myself, but also them a little about my student
teaching experience, as well as thanking them for allowing their child to be apart
of my learning experience. The second way I communicated with the parents was
through a technology application named Remind. Remind is an ongoing feed that
parents sign up to follow, which allows Mrs. Landreth and myself to post about
current classroom events, as well as important dates that are coming up. When
using Remind, we could either send out private messages, or we could send
messages to everyone that is subscribed to her class list. As I took over, I started
sending out our view of the week. I would create a picture that had the important
dates of the week on it, and I would send it out using Remind. The third way I
communicated with the parents of my student teaching class was a Valentines
Day letter I sent home. The letter announced the date and time of our party, and
also provided a list of student names on the back for Valentines Day cards. Also,
during my student teaching, I had many opportunities to communicate with
parents on a face-to-face basis. At many of the events I volunteered at, I was able
to talk with parents about their child, and how happy I was to be apart of their
school year. When parents came in for parties or birthday lunches, I would go
over and introduce myself, and talk with them briefly. Another way I was able to
communicate with parents was through their progress reports. When we sent
progress reports out, I as able to write the comments that went on them. Even
though this is an example of one-way communication, it was nice to actually get
to inform parents on how students were doing, and what they needed to work on.

Dear Parents/Guardians,
As the New Year begins, I am also beginning a
new journey in my life. As you know, I was completing
my clinical placement for Lander University in Mrs.
Landreths class last semester. I am fortunate
enough to have the opportunity to continue my
experience in Mrs. Landreths classroom by also
completing my student teaching with her, as well as
your child. I am excited to be working with your
student, while learning every step of the way! During
this process, I will gradually take over the class full
time, teach for four weeks, and then gradually
release the class back to Mrs. Landreths hands. I
look forward to this experience and hope your child
is excited as I am. Please let me know if you have
any questions.
Sincerely,

Ms. Wilson

** Also, if I have not received a photo release form

from you I will be attaching another one to this
letter. Please sign it and have your child send it back
as soon as possible.

B) Communication/Collaboration with Colleagues: To communicate with my

colleagues, I met with my cooperating teacher and the other third grade teachers
at our weekly planning meetings to discuss what is coming up, as well as the
planning that needs to be completed. These meetings were face to face, and
allowed us to discuss what is going on in our classrooms, and if our students were
ready to move on or review for a day. Another form of communication I had with
my peers was the ACT Aspire test-training day at Pinecrest Elementary, on March
11th. As a grade team, we went into training, recieved our mini-lessons to help us
prepare for the test, and then figured how we were going to incorporate these into
our daily schedule.

C) Communication/Collaboration with the community: For communicating with

people that were not in the school system, I utilized email. I contacted the Mayor
of Greenwood County to see if he would come in and discuss the three branches
of government with my students during our American Revolution unit. Some
people would prefer to be reached through email as opposed to a phone call, and
since I knew he wouldnt answer his office phone, I emailed him. Mayor Adams
came to visit out class on March 24th and discussed his role as Mayor, and also let
students ask questions. Also, a community program that I communicate with
frequently is the after school program at Merrywood. The YMCA comes in and
helps students who may need extra help with schoolwork. The afterschool
program allows students to play outside, have snack, complete their homework,
play on the computers, go to tutoring, as well as eat supper before going home.
When I have students in after school that do not complete their work during our
school day, I will go down and talk with the counselors about having them
complete their work before they get to go outside and play. The counselors are
always very supportive and willing to help in any way possible. Another way I
have supported the community is by supporting the fast food fundraisers that PTO
sponsored. The PTO has had several fundraiser nights at both McDonalds and
Chick-fil-A. I always send out stickers for my students to remind the parents
about fundraiser nights, and I always try to attend the Chick-fil-A nights myself to
support the PTO.

D) Extra Curricular Activities within the school: During my student teaching, I have
volunteered at the PTOs Pastries for Parents, ESOL night, as well as the Fine Arts
night. Pastries for Parents was an event put on by the PTO where parents could
come in and eat breakfast with their child before they started their school day. I
made sure I went around and talked with the parents from my class. I made also
took pictures that Mrs. Green and my teacher could both Tweet, because they both
like to tweet pictures from events, so others can follow school events. ESOL night
was hosted by the school, and was an event where students who are considered
English language learners could come with their families, create picture frames,
and take a family photo. After the event, we got the pictures printed at Walgreens,
and then distributed the frames and pictures to the students the next day. Fine Arts
night was an event at Merrywood where third, fourth, and fifth grade students
hosted a musical review for parents to come watch. During this event, I helped
with the third grade students who were in the program. Then after the program
was over, I helped get students back to their designated room and waited for their
parents to come.
