Explain each aspect of the placemat
(main events, setting, characters,
problem, solution/ending) using
PowerPoint
Explain how the placemat activity
works: each group receives a
placemat and they are required to
fill out the different sections of it
based on the video shown. Each
group member rolls the dice and
that decides what section they are
required to fill out. Explain that if
someone rolls the same number
twice just roll again till a new
number is rolled
Focus on whichever element they
were assigned for the placemat
activity when re-watching
Re-show the video
Each individual takes turns rolling
the dice to decide which section of
the placemat they fill out

Giving the right to pass if they dont want to share during class discussion
If the students finish early they can work in their table groups and form a short
story, they must incorporate the elements they learned during the lesson

Participation and ability to fill out the placemat with clear understanding of the
different story elements
Later lesson of writing their own short story to show understanding of the story
elements
