Artifact Reflection

1.a.
The candidate for certification defines and implements an understanding of
Montessori philosophy.
What: Pictures of the students in my classroom during work time, pictures of
Peace Education ideas
Who: The teacher candidate, students in the class, the classroom
environment
When: 2014-2015 school year

Significant Details: I chose these photos because they are evidence of the
implementation and evolution of the Montessori philosophy, in my classroom,
throughout this year. They capture the children developing a love of learning
through student choice, an uninterrupted work time, and the classroom as a
community.

Analysis: The Montessori philosophy is based on the concept of following

the child. Through this philosophy, the teachers role is that of a guide. The
aim is to assist children in their learning, while helping them to develop a
love of learning. Children are active participants in their education. They are
invested in their own learning. Children learn best when they have choice
and can work and learn at their own pace. The Montessori classroom allows
the student choice within limits. The child chooses what he wants to learn
within limits. This fosters an independence and participation that assists the
child with his education. The philosophy advocates a holistic approach to
learning. It taps into the social, emotional, spiritual, and academic aspects of
learning. The environment creates a positive, respectful, community
atmosphere. The Montessori classroom implements a spiral curriculum that
includes the cosmic curriculum and peace education. The cosmic curriculum
helps children explore and discover their place and interconnectedness to
the universe. The peace education helps children to learn to work through
moral issues and foster peace. This takes place in a multi-aged classroom
where students can learn from each other. It is a uniquely wonderful
environment where students flourish and learn.

Planning: I would like to add a peace mat in my room to foster the peace
education of the Montessori philosophy. This would offer a place for students
to meet and respectfully work out issues in the classroom. I would also like

to compile a basket of books that foster peace education. I think this aspect
of the Montessori philosophy is essential to developing respectful and
responsible citizens.
