careaboutdeeplyandbelieveisveryimportantforeveryone,vitaleven.Theassignment
challengedmebecauseIhadtodoresearchandgetmyfactsstraight.Icouldwriteanessay
basedonlyonmyopinionsofthetopic,butbeingabletoimbedfactsandstatisticsfromreliable
sourcesstrengthensandsupportsmythoughts.Withallofthisresearch,Igottolookatthe
multitudeofpeopleaffectedbysexismandmisogynyinourcountryaswellasothers,andjust
thesheernumberofpeoplebackedupmystatementthatfeminismisverynecessary.IfIwereto
dothisassignmentagain,Iwouldspendmoretimeonit.Becauseitwasjustawritingpromptfor
aclassthatdoesnothaveanemphasisofcomposition,Ididnthavealotoftimetoworkonthis
paper.Thereismuchmoretodiscussonthetopicseeingasthefocalpointwasjusthowsexism
affectstheUS,whichisnoteventhetipoftheicebergasfarasworldwidemisogyny.Iwilluse
whatIlearnedfromthisessayasadailyreminderthattherearemorethanafewfaultsin
America,andtheworld,currently,asfarasequalitygoes.Thisinformationwillgivemeabetter
perspectiveontheworldandwillserveasammunitionformetokeepfightingforequality

Theworldweliveinmaybefarmoreadvancedthanithasbeeninthepast,butwestill
havealongwaytogo.TherearemanyissuesthatIampassionateabout,butwomensrightsare
themostimportantbecauseitisthefightthatsbeenfoughtthelongestbythemostpeople.
Discriminationbasedonrace,religion,bodytype,sexuality,andgenderareallveryimportant
matters,buttheyaremorespecific.Womensrightsissuesaffectpeopleinallofthemore
specificgroupsbecausewomenmakeup51%oftheworldspopulation.Someofthe
heartbreakingstrugglesthatwomenfaceonadailybasisarepeoplesunwillingnesstotake
womenseriouslyintheworkplace,thelackofaccurateinformationprovidedinsexual
education,andtheimpactthatrapeculturehasonyoungwomeneverywhere.
Thefirstwayinwhichsexismiseverpresentintheworldaroundusismens
unwillingnesstorespectfemalesasprofessionals.Younggirlsarebroughtupbeingtoldthatthey
arebossyiftheytakeonaleadershiproleandthatmentalityiscarriedonwiththeminto
adulthood.Therearetheseonesizefitsallgenderrolesthatsocietyhasplacedeachoneofusin,
categorizingmenasthedominantalphamaleandwomenassubmissive,delicate,littleflowers.
Duetothesepreconceivedmisconceptionsabouthowsomeoneshouldbehave,peopledont
respondwellwheneverwomenportraycharacteristicsthatareperceivedasstrictlymasculine,
suchasbeingaleaderorjustbeingindependentingeneral.Becausenoonewilltakewomen
seriouslyintheirjobfield,womengetpaidsubstantiallylessinalmosteveryoccupation.
AccordingtotheU.S.censusdata,bytheageof65awomanwillhavemade$431,000lessthan
amanwiththeexactsameposition.
Anothersocietalnormisthelackofaccurateinformationtaughtinsexualeducation
classes.Abstinenceonlyeducationteachesyounggirlsthatiftheyhavesextheywillloseapart

ofthemselves,anditwillbeahorrificallypainfulandbloodyexperience.Girlsarestilltaughtto
preservetheirvirginitiesVirginity,aconceptusedtodescribetheworthofawomanwhowas
beingsoldortradedtoamanasabelonging.Womenhavethesedoublestandardshammered
intotheirheadfromadolescenceawomanwhohasalotofsexisaslutwhereasamanwho
hasalotofsexdeservestobehighfived.
Thenegativitythatoursocietyhastowardssexuallyliberalwomeniswhatcausesour
modernrapeculture,becausewomenaretaughtnottogetrapedinsteadofteachingmennotto
rape.Becauseweconstantlyreinforceintowomensmindsthattheirbodiesaresexualobjects
(somethingtobeprotected,somethingtobecoveredup),peoplehavetheaudacitytoclaimits
thevictimsfaultiftheygetraped,asiftheysomehowprovokedit.Menseewomenobjectively
insteadofsubjectively.Menseebodypartsofawomaninsteadofthewholeperson,makingit
easiertoobjectifythemandperceivedthemassexobjectsinsteadofpeoplewithcomplex
personalities.Ofcoursethisisnotthecaseinallmales,butitisthecaseinamajorityofmalesin
oursocietybecausewecontinuetoreinforcethisbehaviorbysayingboyswillbeboys.
AccordingtoUniversityofKentuckysCenterofResearchforViolenceAgainstWomen,only
37%ofreportedrapecasesareprosecutedandonly18%ofprosecutedrapecasesendina
conviction.Takingintoconsiderationthatfewerthan10%ofrapecasesarereportedayear,the
numberofwomenwhoarerapedandreceivedjusticeisaminisculenumber.Nowonderwomen
havefearstruckintotheirheartswhentheyrealoneatnight.Ifoursocietydoesntsupport
womenprotectingthemselves,whowillprotectthem?
We,asasociety,needtoworkonincorporatingmoralsonequalityintoraisingyoung
girlsorwewillforeverperpetuatethisideologythatwomenareinferiorforxreasons.Weneed

tomakeachangeinthewayweseewomenbecauseitscaresmetothinkaboutraisinga
daughterinourcurrentworld.Itsterrifyingtometothinkaboutevenmysistergrowingupin
thissexistsocietywereimmersedin.Perhapswitheffortandspreadingthesefactstoanyone
whoswillingtohearitwecaneliminatesomeofthescaryrealitiesoftheworldforawoman.If
wetryhardenough,maybewecangetridofthepaygapaltogether,letyounggirlsknowthey
aremorethanobjects,andmakeittowhereawomandoesntfearwalkingbyherselfatnight.
Afterall,theresnothingintheworldthatsirreversible.
