Abstract:

Hypothesis

The prevalence of diabetes is on the rise , and

it is projected that this will con&nue to aect
more people worldwide. Nutri&on therapy is
considered an essen&al part of educa&on for
pa&ents with diabetes. Diabetes educa&on
programs such as the outpa&ent Diabetes
Educa&on Program at Mercy Philadelphia
Hospital teach pa&ents to manage their
disease through a healthy diet, physical ac&vity
and medica&ons. An evalua&on of this
program from the par&cipants perspec&ve
was conducted u&lizing the diabetes self-
ecacy scales from the Stanford Pa&ent
Educa&on Research Center. Mean score on
this measure increased slightly.

Par&cipants were expected to demonstrate

improved self-ecacy in using basic carbohydrate
coun&ng to manage diabetes, as measured by
change in Diabetes Self-Ecacy Scales.

Objectives:
To evaluate the eec&veness of the nutri&on
educa&on component of diabetes outpa&ent
educa&on through self-rated levels of self-
ecacy of comple&ng diabetes self-
management tasks

Conclusions:

Responses from only two subjects showed a

dierence in level of self-ecacy
One par&cipant had an overall 6.1% change
One par&cipant had an overall 14.8% change
Mean score increased by 3.4%

There was insucient data to conclude on the

ecacy of the nutri&on educa&on component of this
program
Self-ecacy alone is inadequate to determine the
eec&veness of Diabetes Educa&on Programs; other
measurement tools should be included
Par&cipants percep&ons of disease management
may vastly dier from their knowledge and actual
ability to manage their condi&ons
Future research should focus on tools and strategies
to educate individuals with diabetes and how to
improve adherence to a healthy meal plan
Another important research area is to determine
what inuences par&cipants mo&va&on to adhere
to a structured diabetes self-management educa&on
program
