Unit Statement: In this unit, the student will explore the relationship among place value
positions and use the various properties of operations to solve problems. The student will
also solve multiplication problems, and use order of operations to evaluate expressions with
grouping in parentheses. In order to be successful in this unit, the student is expected to be
familiar with the Key Terms and Concepts listed below.
Essential Outcomes: (must be assessed for mastery)
Problem solving and higher order thinking components are essential for A-level mastery.
Each TSW can contain problem solving and higher order thinking components (as found in
suggested text).
1. The Student Will apply unit skills and concepts to real world application problems.
2. TSW use properties of operations to solve problems. (1.3 pp. 13-16)
3. TSW write and evaluate repeated factors in exponent form. (1.4 pp. 17-20)
4. TSW use basic facts and patterns to multiply by multiples of 10, 100, and 1000
mentally. (1.5 pp. 21-24)
5. TSW multiply by one and two digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.
(1.6 pp. 27-30, 1.7 pp. 31-34)
6. TSW use multiplication to solve division problems. (1.8 pp. 35-38)
7. TSW use the strategy solve a simpler problem to solve problems. (1.9 pp. 39-42)
8. TSW write numerical expressions. (1.10 pp. 43-46)
9. TSW evaluate numerical expressions using parentheses. (1.11 pp. 47-50, 1.12 pp. 51-54)
Introduced and Practiced Outcomes: (taught not assessed)
1. The Student Will identify, read and write whole numbers through hundred millions.
(1.1 pp. 5-8, 1.2 pp. 9-12)
