Standards-Based Lesson Plan

Name: Susan Hargrave-Thomas


Topic/Title: Bugs
Target Age Group: 3 and 4 year olds
Purpose/Objectives/Outcomes: To learn new skills, new knowledge,
reasoning and problem solving. To build on social and emotional skills,
curiosity, attentiveness and persistence, and creativity. To have a positive
approach to learning.
The students will be able to: Have hands on investigations, learn how to
speak in another language, learn new vocabulary words and make a
pattern.
Assessment of student outcomes: Retelling a story in order of events,
making a pattern, how many circles does each add and in what order. How
many will add which blocks to weigh and how many will they add.
Curriculum Expectations/State or National Standards addressed
The curriculum expectations by state are: The child demonstrates selfdirection while participating in a range of activities, shows eagerness to
learn about different topics. Hold attentiveness and shows persistence
despite distractions. Child feels confident and feels positive about

themselves and their ability to do things and to adapt to changing


situations. The child demonstrates the ability to express their own unique
way of seeing the world. To demonstrate the ability to analyze information
and situations in order to form judgments and to seek solutions to
problems. The children understand directions, stories and conversations, to
uses verbal and nonverbal communication for a variety of purposes to
share observations, ideas, and experiences, problem solve, reason,
predict and seek new information. Shows an interest in books and
comprehends books read aloud. To have the children tests predictions
through exploration and experimentation, to reflect upon the scientific
investigation and its findings. For the child to recognize that they live in a
place with many people and that there are people and events in other
places. For the child to recognize, copy, extend, describe and create
patterns.
Materials/Resources/Technology: Large blocks and classroom scale, paint
and circles shaped sponges and googly eyes. On the computer translate
English word beetle to Spanish el escarabajo, and the book The Very
Hungry Caterpillar.

Instructional Strategies, Accommodations, and Student activities: To read


the book in a fun and exciting way, have the children extend or limit circle
patterns and let the children experiment with the blocks by weighing one
size and shape against one large block.

Self-Evaluation/Assessment: To let the children extend their curiosity on


other classroom toys on weighing other objects to the block. Let the
children pick the colors of choice to use for their circle patterns. Let the
children use the flannel board pieces to the book on The Very Hungry
Caterpillar as an activity to put into order of events.

Skills and student behaviors to be worked on next time: Have the children
use the CD with the book The Very Hungry Caterpillar to follow along and
read along with the narrator. Have the children work together to come up
with a conclusion on the blocks.
