This unit deals with the appreciation of different types of networks and Communication terms on
the Internet

Unit Details
1. Networks (2 periods)

This lesson begins the unit with the use of the Picture
interpretation a critical thinking strategy, where students will
be given a picture to analyse and write on what they see. This
will help find out students knowledge on networks and also
gauge their critical thinking skills. This lesson is conducted
in the computer lab with Internet Access.

Explain the benefits of using Networks
Describe the different types of networks and
how it is used in real life.

Differentiate between small and large
networks

This lesson will use Socratic questioning and brainstorming


as students will be given a scenario to brainstorm and answer
scaffolding questions on it. Students will be placed in groups
where they will discuss the scenario with each member of the
group to answer the questions.

and Voiceband

This lesson focuses more on the Socratic questioning


techniques with a little brainstorming involved. Students will
be in a circle to discuss the various types of wireless
networks available.

Choosing the most appropriate wireless
technology for a given situation.

This lesson focuses on both the use of Brainstorming and


Socratic questioning where students are given an activity
sheet to work on by themselves. In this lesson the teachers
role is to guide the students.

5. Online Communication
(3 periods)

Explain the Internet


Explain the World wide Web
Explain Webpages and Websites and how it
works on the World Wide Web
Explain the term Web browser
Explain the different tools and languages used
to create webpages and websites are created
Explain term HTML and XHTML
Create and Design a simple webpage using
HTML code
Explain the term URL and its purpose

In this lesson students will be in groups of 3s and conduct

research on the internet. This lesson will focus more on the


Brainstorming strategy. Students will also discuss among
themselves in their groups how the terms researched are used
in their daily lives.

6. Evaluation (2 periods)

Explain how files are transferred from one


computer to another
(Uploading/Downloading) using FTP and
HTTP
Explain the term Podcasting and how it works
Explain Synchronous and Asynchronous
communication with real life situations and
examples
Explain what is Email?
Explain what is blogging?
Explain what are online chats?
Identify advantages of using online
communication

A written evaluation based on the entire unit will be given to


the students at the end of the unit to assess their
understanding of their large and small networks and the
Internet.
