What expressive
possibilities can be
drawn from these
principles?
Variety
Variety can be
defined as
difference.
Proportion
The relative size of
visual elements
within an image.
Emphasis
Emphasis gives
prominence to part
of a design.
Proportion in a
work can be
created by
changing the size
and comparting
visual elements
within a work.
Using proportion,
the relationship
between the
elements can
create dramatic
plays at distance
and relative
importance.
Emphasis can be
created in a work
by keeping the
focus in a work on
the focal point.
Proportion could
draw the viewer
further into the
painting. It could
make a painting
more realistic, or it
could make it
more appealing
because things
arent as flat and
bland.
Two types of
proportion are the
golden ratio and
rule of thirds.
These types of
proportion are
recurring and
compositional
rules that govern
rules of proportion.
Using emphasis,
an entire work can
contain a meaning
that is all summed
up to one center
point, therefore
giving the viewer
the idea of the
work.
Emphasis could
place everything
but whats being
focused on in a
distance, giving
what is being
emphasized more
weight.
Two types of
emphasis are
isolation and
contrast.
These types of
emphasis in art
work by separating
the subject from
other distracting
elements and
drawing focus
from its
surroundings.
These types in
Variety are all
elements, or the
building blocks of
works of art. They
can all be used to
create variety in
art because they
can all be
changed.
These principles can be used by artists to create works that
reflect exactly what it is an artist is trying to convey.
Especially having the ability to craft a composition in a way
that translates a feeling to the viewer.
