Student Teaching Evaluation/Observation Record

Student Teacher: Krista Popkin
Cooperating teacher: Kelly Thayer
Observed by Katie Rybakova

Date/Time 3rd period Jan 29th 2015

Throughout the student teaching experience the student must demonstrate growth in each of the FEAPS. For purposes of assessing this,
growth performance should be evaluated at the pre-professional level. This form serves as the observational record of this visit and is
not the required formative or summative FEAPS assessment required of FSU.

Comments: Krista communicated with the students clearly and effectively. She was able to communicate in whole-class and
individual instruction, and was clear in her directions about thesis statements and conclusion paragraphs. Krista and I spoke about her
ability to communicate guidelines or time stamps as groups were working: i.e. You have 5 minutes left or By now you should be
finishing your introductory sentence.

Comments: This was not observed as this was the first observation.
Critical Thinking

Comments: Krista engages in critical thinking herself and engages students in critical thinking as they complete the group work
together. She frequently prompts students with complex, higher-order thinking skill questions that prompts continued and focused
group work. We spoke about having students perhaps summarizing how they felt they did on their group work assignment and how
they did the outlined steps correctly instead of Krista summarizing it for them.

Comments: Krista is very aware of her classroom dynamics and is certainly cognizant of the diversity of the demographic and students
she works with. Specific references to diversity were not observed.

Comments: Krista engaged students in a short lecture where they were prompted to take notes, and then facilitated as students divided
up into group work. Students gleaned from many facets of this activity, including dialogue with peers, introductory statement content,
and dialogue with Krista herself. Dialogue between groups or comparing group concluding paragraph may have been an addition facet
that Krista may add in future lessons, and, of course, time permitting.

Comments: Krista is clearly apt in this area as she seamlessly and without struggle summarized introductory paragraphs and added
additional thoughts without hesitation to the notes presented on the projector about concluding paragraphs.

Comments: We discussed how the groups for this activity may have been a little big for the format of the group work, and how, by
giving guidelines, the rest of the students may continue to be on-task as Krista moves around, but for the most part, Krista manages the
class very well, and it is clear that students respect and listen to herany place where Krista moved the students quickly geared into
the activity with more rigor.

Comments: Krista as moved in as the teacher in this class seamlessly. Seldom do students talk to Kelly in the class, other than to say
hello or talk about colleges, and Krista is seen as the teacher and treated like so. Krista also does a good job of picking her battles
and allowing chit-chat to die down on its own instead of struggling to maintain class control. We spoke about perhaps being a bit
more authoritative in tone and diction: i.e. instead of saying Would you guys like to share? saying Okay, group three, lets hear
what you guys came up with.
Technology

Comments: Technology wasnt necessary for this lesson. Krista integrated the use of a projector for notes but for the most part this
was an active group work lesson rather than a lesson that used technology. Technology integration would be interesting to see.

Comments: Krista does a great job of assessing students-- despite not observing this first hand, I believe that after speaking with Kelly
and Krista, Krista is well deserving of a prepared distinction here, as she is clearly on top of grading and does so quickly and well for
students, especially considering the workload dual enrollment has.

Comments: Krista does a great job with projection, eye contact, and communicating with her students her expectations. I particularly
like the time stamps and expectations she gives students on a regular basis throughout the activity she plans. She is well beyond
simple classroom management and is honing her teaching philosophies.

Comments: Krista is truly a student of the profession-- she continues to seek out opinions from a variety of sources, and is now
planning to set up an observation in which either the principal or AP will come and watch her to give feedback.
Critical Thinking

Comments: Krista both uses critical thinking of her own and expects students to think critically about the subject material. She uses
prompting to get students to think more critically about the activities she facilitates.

Comments: Considering the demographic Krista works with, she is doing tremendously well in working with a diverse set of students.
We spoke about how the class I observed in particular had not been acting the way they usually act and how she needed to adjust
accordingly.

Comments:
Krista has always been very, very knowledgeable about the content area. She uses this information in a very effective way with
students in a matter which is not condescending but very much so informative. She constantly uses prompting for students to employ
higher order thinking skills, like asking questions such as "Why do you think that?" "Was that effective?"
Learning Environments

Comments: Krista does a spectacular job with knowing where her students are at and adjusting when necessary to accommodate for
particular students. Teaching a dual enrollment class means she needs to abide by both FAMU's policies as well as Godby's policies.
The first dual enrollment classes offered by Godby are the classes which she is teaching, and she is doing a fantastic job keeping up
with all of the requirements of both programs. Her lessons certainly are built to both engage and educate students effectively.
Planning

Comments: Krista does a great job with time management, managing class and individual behaviors, and maintaining a class which is
both open to commentary but also perpetuates high expectations of students, which is a very challenging dynamic to create
considering especially her student demographic.

Comments: Krista certainly has taken on the role of the teacher and her students very much respect and listen to her. She does a great
job commanding the class attention and transitions seamlessly from activity to activity.

Comments: Because the activity called for groupwork, the choice of not including technology other than highlighting and projecting
the essays chosen makes sense for the activity.
