Discipline Philosophy: Influential Theorist

Guardia
ns

Throughout the creation of my classroom management plan, I

reflected on the theorist who has influenced my
beliefs and philosophy of classroom management.
There are several theorists who influence my beliefs
and philosophy, but two stick out from the rest.
The first theorist who influenced my beliefs
and philosophy is Dr. Fred Jones. There are two
primary areas in which Dr. Jones has influenced me.
The first is the See, Say, Do model of teaching. In which, the teacher
provides input the student provides output. Which sounds similar to
other teaching models, but this model looks like this: (Teacher) input(Student) output- (Teacher) input- (Student) output- (Teacher) input(Student) output. Where other models look like: (Teacher) input-inputinput-input (Student) output. It allows students the opportunity to take
in small amounts of information and comprehend. Instead of the
student taking in large amounts of information and only
comprehending a portion of the information.
The second area in which Dr. Jones has influenced me is PAT
(Preferred Activity Time). In PAT, student earn to for an activity that is
educational. Students can earn the time by saving time in other areas
throughout the day. For example, if it normally takes the class 10
minutes to use the restroom and the students take only 7 minutes then
the students have earned 3 minutes of PAT. To learn more about Dr.

Jones visit his website at

http://www.fredjones.com.
The next theorists is Lee and
Marlene Canter, they have influenced
my classroom management plan
through discipline hierarchy. The Canters believe there should be an
escalation to both reward and punishment. Their belief and research
has influenced me to use that hierarchy in my behavior plan. To learn
more visit the website

Canter is a co-founder of the website.

Preparation:
Post Card to Students:

Dear Student

Hello, my name is Mr.

Southerland. I will be your 3rd grade
teacher this coming year. I look
forward to the exciting things we will
learn this year. Our classroom will be
room 301. I will greet you at the door
and I will be wearing a red tie. I hope
you have a wonderful time during the
rest of your summer.

Preparation: Introductory Letter to Parents

Dear Parents/Guardians,
As you know, this summer is coming to an end and the new school year will soon begin.
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself: My name is Mr. Southerland and I will
be teaching your child in the 3rd grade this year. I am a recent graduate of Ball State University
where I studied Elementary Education with a concentration in Mathematics. I am excited to be at
(Insert School) this year. I am looking forward to the great things the students and I will discover
this year.
I would like to invite you to a meeting that I will be hosting on (night of first day of
school). In this meeting, I will discuss my expectations, procedures, policies, and my
management plan. I will also be answering any questions you might have and addressing any
accommodations that need to be made. This meeting will be for parents only, however if you are
unable to find a sitter there will be activities for students in the gym. If you are unable to attend,
but would like to schedule another meeting, please contact me and we can arrange an alternate
date. Please note this is not a parent-teacher conference, or a "Meet the Teacher Night"; each of
these will occur later in the school year.
This year, I am planning on doing a lot of hands-on learning opportunities and several
projects that will be individual and collaborative. Parents and guardians are invited and always
encouraged to attend and participate in these activities. I will talk about this more when we meet.
In addition, I will be using a behavior management plan in the classroom. While I expect
we will have a great year, I believe in being proactive. Students who misbehave will have known
consequences. However, I do believe students who do not misbehave should be rewarded for
their positive behavior. Each day, we work with a ladder. Students will start in the middle of the
ladder and can move up or down based on their behavior. There will three steps up and three
steps down. I will have more information at our meeting and feel free to ask questions. We will
be meeting in room 301, which will be the 3rd grade classroom this year.
If you have any questions or require accommodations, please do not hesitate to contact
me at the schools number xxx-xxx-xxxx (please call between 7:00-8:00 am or between 3:00-4:00
pm); my email is esoutherland@yourschool.k12.in.us. I look forward to seeing all of you at the
meeting on (date of meeting) and working with your child this year.
Sincerely,

Mr. Southerland

Preparation: First Day Bellwork Assignment: Writing Prompt

Best Year Ever!
Good morning students! For the next couple of minutes, I want you to imagine
what it would take to make this your best year ever. Once you have an idea, take the next
3-5 minutes and write it down. You should include, but not limited to:
What are your expectations for the teacher?
What are your expectations for yourself?
How do you see your best year ever?

Once students are finished writing, we will have a grand discussion about the best
year ever. Students will share their ideas and the teacher will share his ideas. Together as
a class we will choose a couple of the ideas and create a classroom goal list. This
document will be a working document; throughout the year we will return and add or
adjust our goals always thinking of our big goal to have the best year ever.

Discipline Plan/Classroom Rules: How Rules are Selected

I believe classroom rules should be selected as a class. Students will feel more
responsible for the rules, if they are given the opportunity to help create the classroom
rules. However, these are the types of rules I would hope the classroom would develop.
Classroom Rules
1. Keep hands, feet, and other objects to yourself.
2. Listen to directions the first time given.
3. Raise your hand for questions or to get out of your seat.

4. Respect the people and property around you.

5. All school rules and handbook procedures will be followed in this room.
Discipline Plan/Classroom Rules: Behavior Plan
Each student will have a folder with a 7-step ladder. Each day the students will
start in the middle of the ladder. The students will be able to move 3-steps up or 3 steps
down based on their behavior one step at a time. I am using a folder, so students can
keep where they are at on the ladder to themselves.

Identification of Area or Item

Teacher workspace for small group activity.
Horseshoe tables for students work space. (Seats 4-5 students)
Skylight for natural lighting.
Writing center for students to work at during center time.
Teachers desk.
Computer/Ipad-charging station.
Student and teacher assigned storage space for books and other supplies.
Library corner.
Subject or Theme center for students to work at during center time.
Classroom entrance.
Student cubbies for backpacks, coats, and mailboxes.
Courtyard to be used for science and other subjects related to outdoor
observations.
Hand washing station.
Soft seating for individual work time during center time.

Seating: Written Rationale

The arrangement of the classroom and items within the classroom were chosen
based on the philosophy of the classroom should be warm and inviting. I chose to use
horseshoe shaped tables, so they maybe turned facing forward at times and moved into
the shape of large circle at other times. The other items such as the skylight,
computer/Ipad-charging station, hand washing area, and courtyard were select based on
the idea of my perfect classroom. The other items such as storage space and cubbies
were chosen for organization reasons that go with having horseshoe tables.
In the classroom, I used kidney shaped tables to support individual and
collaborative learning. The tables provide a space for individual learning, but when
combined with other tables allow for group activities to take place. The tables are also
shaped in this manner to create a big circle when all connected for classroom discussions,
allowing for more positive social interactions. The centers and technology help to selfmotivate students, while actively engaging in their learning.
Seating: Arrangement Method
The horseshoe shaped tables will initially be shaped in large circle shape.
Students seating will be randomly selected at first. Each table will hold 5 students; I will
number each seat at a table 1 5. As each student enters the class on the first day, I will
hand the student a card with a table color and seat number. The cards will be shuffled for
random seating.
