Objectives: To understand how adversity shapes individuals and experiences and

to gain perspective on racism, sexism, and discrimination. To understand how
racism, sexism, discrimination, and prejudice still exists today and impacts all of
our lives daily.

Essential Question: How has discrimination affected lives throughout history and
how does it still affect the world today?

Final Project: 100 Pts for the work in the packet.

Discussion Work: 50 pts.

1. Write as if you are writing a letter home from the perspective of a Tuskegee
Airman. This letter will be just after you have graduated from flight training,

you need to explain everything that is going on in your life. What is good
about graduation and what is bad? Also how you are dealing with all of the
problems you have been experiencing.
2. Write as if you are writing a letter home from the perspective of a Tuskegee
Airman. Your squadron has been stationed in Italy to fly bomber escort.
Describe your feelings as an escort pilot. Also describe your feelings when
you are not flying and how the horrible segregation of a military base feels
to you.
3. Explain what your article is about. Context, bias, perspective, and
presentism should all be included in your explanation.
4. Discuss how your article relates to the Tuskegee Airman. This can be
directly, or it could be more thematically connecting (adversity, racism,
discrimination, civil rights changes, etc.).
5. Have you ever faced adversity in your life? How? Have you ever seen
discrimination occur? I want you to think about your daily life and I want
your answer to be based on things you think about when you watched the
movie, or read your article. This is an open, honest, opinion question.
