Practice/Development
Go over addition and subtraction of integers
do a few example equations on the board.
After review, hand out the integer questions
and answers on the colored paper. Hand out
an equal number of questions and answers
but hand out a duplicate answer sheet if
there are an odd number of students. Get
students with one color of paper to stand on
one side of the line, and students with the
other color of paper to stand on the opposite
side of the line. Get students to crumple
sheets into snowballs, and on the count of
three, throw their snowball to the opposite
side of the line tell students to throw
nicely! Direct them to pick up a piece of
paper on their side of the line, unfold it and
see if they got a question or answer.
Students with the question sheets must
solve the equation and find the person with
the correct answer sheet. This person will be
their partner for the card activity. If there is
an odd number of students there will be one
group of three. Instruct students to sit with
their partner. Once with your partner, share
3 fun facts with each other.
Explain to students the integer card game
instruct them to remove face cards from the
deck. Ace cards will represent the number
one for this purpose. Red cards will be
positive numbers, and black cards will be
negative numbers. Students will deal out an
equal number of cards to themselves and
their partner(s). They will then flip over one
card from their decks at the same time.
Whoever solves the equation first gets to
keep the cards. Calculators are not allowed.
