gaps when asked, but did not dwell on the subject.

0 School largely in cultural blindness / cultural pre-

competence stages
0 Attitude that the school is a place of opportunity for

anyone who wants to take it, but not all students make
the choice to take advantage of this opportunity.

0 Vocational/Technical School
0 Full-time Employment

0 Higher than SDUSD average in SAT/ACT scores,

CAHSEE pass rates, college-going rate, AP test

enrollment.
0 Extremely low high school dropout rate.

Weaknesses
0 Minority students perform below peers on

standardized tests. Speci9ically, Hispanic and African

American students perform well below their white
and Asian peers on the CAHSEE, STAR, AP, and other
exams.
0 Hispanic and African American students are
signi9icantly under-enrolled in Honors and AP
courses.
0 Similar gaps exist between female and male students,

non-meal eligible and meal eligible, general education

and special education, and English 9luent and English
learners.

0 Data largely speaks for itself. Gaps exist at all levels

are not being given enough attention school-wide.

Recommendations
1. Become more data-driven in all aspects, including

reviewing the current data and determining ways to

acquire new data not already collected.
2. Create a team of teachers, counselors,
administrators, and other staff members to respond
to the data, with particular attention to closing the
gaps identi9ied.
3. School counselors should play a more dominant role
in academic interventions.
4. Barriers to entry for courses should be eliminated,
particularly for Advanced Placement (AP) courses.

Re9lections
0 Easy to overlook the

achievement gaps at
Henry
0 Data is impressive on

the surface, but major

discrepancies emerge
on closer examination
of the data

0 Need for data as a tool

for social justice

0 School counselor
uniquely poised to not
only collect data but to
analyze and disseminate
information
