Reflection and Self-Evaluation

Standard V: Reflection and Self-Evaluation

Reflection and Self-Evaluation
DM1: Diversity
In order to be culturally responsive to the students in your classroom, it is imperative to
know each one of them and the needs they all have. To effectively differentiate the content for
diverse learners, I implemented multiple methods of the Sheltered Instructional Observation
Protocol (SIOP). The levels of learners set the stage for higher achievement. The SIOP model is
not only beneficial for ELL students, but for all students at any skill level. The adjustments made
to assessments, lesson delivery, and assignments were implemented in conjunction with SIOP
principles. These adjustments provided an opportunity for struggling learners to reach the same
standards as all other students. These methods also allow for the advanced learners to extend
their learning through enriched and in-depth instruction as well as application and assessment
opportunities.
DM2: Effective Pedagogy
The lessons taught throughout the unit incorporated interactive, hands-on activities and
assignments. Using the technology resources we have in the classroom such as IPads,
Chromebooks, Promethean Board, and interactive websites made the content more engaging and
interactive. I also used materials and strategies such as whiteboards, whole group instruction, and
collaborative learning opportunities in order to utilize the Gradual Release model of instruction.
Using these strategies and tools, along with different programs and activities allowed for
complete engagement from all students.

DM3: Subject Matter

Unfortunately, while preparing for this unit I wasnt as familiar with the content as I
should have been. This provided me the opportunity to study and research events, time periods,
and reasons for the westward expansion era of our country. Being able to research and study on
my own prior to presenting the material to the students, gave me complete confidence in this
subject matter. I sat alongside students as they did their own research and had small group
discussions as well. I wanted them to know that this content was interesting to me as well and
that we are never too old to stop learning new things. I have gained an immense amount of
confidence in this subject matter.
DM4: Environment
I encouraged students continually to synergize throughout this unit. I wanted every
student to participate and feel as though they could provide their insight in small groups or whole
group instruction. Along with this, I encouraged them to listen well to one another. To consider
all ideas and opinions before shooting them down. There has been a very high bar set in place as
far as the expectation of respect goes in this classroom. The students did really well synergizing
and working hard to help one another and listen to others ideas and thoughts.
DM5: Reflection
The data that I collected from the assessments gave me a perspective on how much
knowledge each student already had coming into this unit. This helped me to gear my lessons
and activities to their level of knowledge and build on that knowledge. I was able to formally
assess the students throughout this unit, giving me understanding of how much knowledge they

were actually retaining, and what I could do to build on that knowledge, or at some points go
over previous subject matter that didnt seem to be retained as well by the majority of students.
DM 6: Teaching Dispositions:
Teaching this unit I was able to learn that the more students were involved in their own
learning and academic growth, the more confidence and motivation they gained. This increase in
confidence reflected back on me as an educator. As I saw my students gaining confidence and
working well with one another, I found that in turn, I was gaining more confidence in myself as
an educator. The demeanor that I have held myself to and the rapport with the students has been
extremely positive. I feel that because of the respect that I show toward the students, I get that
same respect shown to me as well. This, too, gives me an immense amount of confidence in my
skills as a professional educator.
