Case foundation
The purpose of this course is to emphasize to the student the importance of solid
basic report writing. Police work revolves around the foundation of critical report
writing, so it is essential for students to know what to gather during an incident in
order to create a well written police report. Students will also examine the importance
of statement taking from people and understanding how an investigation develops.
The student would also gain a basic understanding of an interview and interrogation.
The target audiences for this training session are incoming and existing officers in

the profession of law enforcement. Whether its new officers learning about the
importance of report writing and statement taking or the officers that have been on
the road, this course will benefit all. Majority of the job is about reports and
statements, which is why the need for officers to do it right is vital.

This course is a face to face traditional classroom block of instruction. The length
of this course is 24 hours, or three 8 hour days.

VII. Two goals the student should accomplish from this course.

Two objectives the student will need to reach the goals of this course.
A. Given a description of a police report, the student will be able to identify the
integral parts and body a report and demonstrate it verbally or in writing. The
student will be able to evaluate the different areas of police report, such as who,
what, when, where, why and how by their ability to discuss verbally or in writing
an actual case study report.
B. Given the description of an official police statement, the student will be able to
identify what needs to be in a statement and when to exactly obtain one and
demonstrate it verbally or in writing. The student will be able to ascertain the
details of a statement such as who, what, where, when, why and how. The student
will be able to determine the difference of a statement and a police report, the
actual details of the incident versus an overview and discuss it verbally or in
writing.
