Annotated Bibliography

Butler, Octavia E. Kindred. Boston: Beacon, 2003. Print.

This is the most important source for my paper, the novel. It is about an African
American woman who time travels back in time to the 1800s. She goes back and forth from era
to era to save her long distant relatives. As the story grows so does Dana and Rufuss
relationship.
The source is so useful to my paper there are many conversations that I plan on citing. It
is the most valid source because it is the novel itself.
This is all of my research; I have to analysis this to write a proper literary analysis paper.

"If All 2003: A Conversation with Octavia Butler." Writers Books. New York State Council.
Web. 15 Apr. 2015.
This source is an interview Butler did discussing Kindred, and her thoughts on the story.
The interview gives very useful details about her goals in writing Kindred, and the points she
wanted to get across by writing it. The interview ends with personal questions for Butler, though
this is fascinating it is not important in writing my paper.
This can be useful in my paper because I can compare my own thoughts to Octavia
Butlers. Though I am taking a different approach on the argument her ideas help push the writing
process along. In the interview she covers topics I had questions about for example why she
made Kevin white instead of black, but by using this article many questions like this one are
answered.
I want to put this in my paper because it is a personal in depth interview with the author
herself over the book I chose. I like that she answers some questions I had and some questions I
didnt even think to ask. By using this in my paper the writing will be more personal, like the
author was helping me write it.
Lewis, Jone Johnson. "Black and White Women Abolitionists." About Education. N.p., n.d. Web.
26 Mar. 2015.
This source gives some details about women abolitionists black and white. There is a
drop down if you are looking for a specific women or race of the women. Every woman in this
article made an impact towards abolishing slavery in their own way. Sojourner Truth and Harriet
Tubman are the two that I am going to focus my paper on.

This source can be useful to my paper the information is very reliable. It could be a very
useful source in my paper. The information is from a education source meaning everything is
valid and correct.
I think that this source could be useful to my paper, mostly for some strong black women
influences on slavery. I want to use this in my paper, because it can help me put familiar names
from history to help my argument.
Williams, Heather A. "About." Harvard Education Publishing Group. Harvard, n.d. Web. 27 Mar.
2015.
This source is an exert from a book written by a grad student, from the University of
North Carolina. The writer writes about self-taught slaves, and the impact they made. Many
slaves were punished and killed if they were found trying to be literate. Education was wanted
throughout the whole slave population and even the free black population.
This source can be very useful to my paper because Dana was an educated African
American and she had a strong influence on Rufus. This is a very good source because, it is
written for the Harvard journal. The goal of this source in my power is to show how being an
educated slave could really change the way they were treated.
I want to put this in my paper when I talk about how Danas education made Rufus treat
her differently. She was able to do less work because she could read to Rufus instead. This
source made me realize just how difficult it was for slaves and free blacks to get an education. If
they had an education then maybe slavery would have ended a lot sooner than it did.
