CASE CONSULATION

2
Session #1

Background Data
The client is a traditional undergraduate student at Wright State University. She is in the
first semester of college as an undetermined student. She does not have any children and is not
married. Her work experiences consist of babysitting for family friends and currently works on
campus. She was very involved in her dance team, held the position of officer, and assisted with
instructing younger dancers. She is working towards her bachelor degree and has a high school
diploma.
The client has enjoyed dancing in the past and the opportunities to instruct what she
knows. She does not mind being in a fast paced environment as long as she is prepared and
knowledgeable. She enjoys the working with groups of people and is a quick learner with new
systems. As of now, she is feeling scatterbrained to where she is interested in many things and
needs assistance narrowing down the options.
Observations
On October 2, 2014, the client and the counselor met for the first session in the student
union of Wright State University. The client was dressed as most first-time freshman college
students are. She was friendly and fully engaged with the counselor during the session. She was
very interested in taking the assessments and figuring out what path of career would fit best. She
had the experience of an academic advisor who did not really help her figure out what major to
go into or referred her to any services to assist in her exploration. The client was quiet at first
when talking about what she would desire in a job. She was unsure of which major to choose as
she has interest in more than one field. The skills that she possess and is self-disclosed as good at

is writing, catching on quickly to information and processes, she enjoys learning new things, and
enjoys working with people whether one-on-one or with a group.
Overall Impression
As mentioned before, the client was interested in taking the assessments and narrowing
down the options. It was made clear that if the client had any questions or did not agree with
what the counselor said, she was asked to speak up and let the counselor know. The client was
excited to understand what code she would receive and how that would assist in her decision.
The counselor can see that the client is a very passionate individual for assisting others and does
want to figure out what career path is right for her.
Session #2
Assessments
For the second session, the client and the counselor met in the student union at wright
State University on October 17, 2014. The assessments were completed during session two were
self-directed search and work values inventory. The client understood the two assessments and
was able to complete them on her own with very little clarification from the counselor. It was
understood that this session would be mainly for completing the assessments and if the client has
any questions. The final session was scheduled as the counselor wanted to interpret the
assessments and be able to fully prepare for the final session.
Session #3
Interpretations
The client and counselor met on October 30, 2014 to go over the assessments, look into
what the assessments results meant to the client, and complete some other assessments as seen fit
by the counselor.

CASE CONSULATION

The self-directed search assessment for the Holland code confirmed the clients interest.
It was determined that her code was SAE. With social at twenty-one, artistic at fifteen, and
enterprising at eleven, there was a well differentiated profile as the next highest was eight for
investigative.

The counselor expected the social and artistic codes, as the client is very interested in
dance and helping others. While going through the lists of words that are commonly used to
describe social, artistic, and enterprising, the client agreed with the words that describe a social
person to represent her and some of the artistic describers. She did not fully agree with the
words describing her as an enterprising person, the counselor reassured the client that as the third

CASE CONSULATION

code it would not fully describe her and is ten points from the highest code of social. The client
understood and agreed that the summary code described her and her interests.
The counselor asked the client to look at the career fields under the SAE, SEA, ASE,
AES, ESA, and EAS codes and highlight all careers that she could see herself pursing and be
interested in. The client highlighted about six careers she was interested in learning more about.
The client and counselor then went on to O*Net webpage to look up the information about the
specific careers she highlighted. The first one we looked up was a career that the client had
thought of pursuing outside of the codes, nursing. The counselor also brought up Wright State
Universitys webpage with the academic programs to be able to see the requirements for getting
into the program. While going through the necessary tasks on O*Net online, it became apparent
that the client likes the idea of helping people, but not the idea of dealing with bodily fluids or
some other tasks listed. The counselor then asked the client if she had taken an anatomy course
in high school, the client had not. It was then recommended that if the client wanted to possibly
pursue a nursing career, it would be wise to take an anatomy and physiology course and see if the
interest was still apparently. After talking through what was required of nurses and what is
expected of the nurse during work hours, the client had determined that she had not expected
some things about nursing as a career. The other careers that the client highlighted was
elementary teacher, preschool teacher, and daycare teacher. From this path of teaching, we
looked into the early childhood education as a major. While looking at O*net for teacher, the
client has some concerns about the information part. When expressing the concerns, the client
had not had any courses that would teach techniques to handle the situations and be able to break
the work down to teach it. By realizing that through the courses to receive a bachelor degree in

CASE CONSULATION

education, she would learn how to manage a classroom as well as different techniques to break
the information down to systematic process.
Another career the client expressed interest in was becoming a choreographer or dance
coach. It was apparent that the client is passionate about dancing and creating choreography. The
counselor asked about if the client is planning to stay in Ohio or is planning to move into a more
populated city. The client expressed the desire to stay in the current geographical area. From this
determination, the counselor made it clear that it is also wise to keep in mind what type of jobs
are not available in certain areas. The example used to show this point was wanting to become an
actor/actress, the best place to go is out to a place like California where more jobs are available
versus staying in Dayton, Ohio area. The client then decided that as there is not really a job
market for choreographers unless she would own her own studio, which she did not want to, that
it would be a good hobby. The counselor asked if she would be willing to be a dance coach for a
local high school or work part-time at a studio. The client had not thought of it and loved the
idea.
The final career we looked up was teacher, specifically early childhood. She was interest
in this career as she liked working with little children and the idea of assisting in their
educations. This also fit into her Holland code of SAE. She also enjoys the aspects of the career
being off through the certain times of the year, as she wants to enjoy time with her family down
the road. The client made the connection to become the high school dance/cheerleading coach to
satisfy her interest in choreography and working with children.
Using Supers work values inventory, the clients top work values included altruism,
achievement, and variety, while her lowest work values included aesthetics, creativity, and
surrounds/supervisory relations/independence. While going through the results it became

CASE CONSULATION

questionable as to how she was considered artistic but creativity had such a low score. We
discussed the specific numbers and determined that she had accidently put down the wrong
number. Since the accident, we double-checked the questions above and below the ones, the rest
were correct to her thoughts. It was then shown that the rest of the results were correct and
correlated with her Holland code results. From this the client decided that the work values would
meet with the teaching aspect and with what factors she would look for in an environment.
Other Assessments
As using the self-directed search and the work values inventory, the counselor had
decided to have the client complete an occupational family tree. The thought behind it was as no
one in her family was pressuring her to go one way versus another. It was to show what careers
were most prevalent in the family. From the family tree, it was shown that the family does value
education of some level, but does not push towards any certain career path. The clients family
occupations from being a preacher, homemaker, dealing with finances, higher education,
criminal justice, and military. It was expressed that the family especially her mother that it is
important to be happy with the career and to take what time is needed to figure it out without
going past a reasonable amount of years.

CASE CONSULATION

The other assessment was a shorter version of the Myers-Briggs personality test
indicator; the client believed she had already taken one but could not remember her style. The
reasoning behind doing the personality test with doing the self-directed search was to back up the
type of personality. The client is considered ENFJ as she thrived when around people and goes
more with her feelings versus facts. She does like to understand the facts but likes to see the
whole picture. The counselor then showed the client what type of careers an ENFJ personality is
attracted to. It had again reconfirmed the clients interest in teaching as an ENFJ is considered
the natural teachers.
Client Reactions
From going through the assessments, counselor could see passion in the clients eyes
when discussing being an early childhood teacher and dance coach. Once the client had come to
the realization that, her dream of being able to work with children as well as work with teens in a
dance environment could come true the counselor could see the weight lifted off her shoulders.
From the beginning the client was worried that she would not find a major that she would be
interested in and see herself in a career path. At the end of the session the client looked more
relaxed and excited to schedule spring classes and get started towards becoming a teacher.
Recommendations
1. Since the client had expressed interest in the nursing field, the counselor suggested taking
ANT2100 to see if the interest was genuine or the client wants to help people. The client

CASE CONSULATION

decided that after discussing what tasks the a nurse partakes in she does not feel the
career path would suit her.
2. Since the client has been taking general education courses, it was recommended to look
more in-depth at the major information on Wright State Universitys site and determine
what courses that are suggested for the first year to take in the spring semester.
3. The final recommendation from the counselor was to make another appointment with her
academic advisor to discuss the decision to major in early childhood education and to
find student in the program and talk with them about their experiences.
Counselor Reaction
It was an amazing experience to work with the client and to be a part of her ah-h moment.
The experience of conducting the assessments and being able to hold sessions with the client. It
was great to see that my passion for student affairs and assisting students with academic advising
was backed up by this experience. At the beginning, I was nervous, as I did not want to give
wrong or bad advice or not be able to help the client figure out what type of career path to go
into. After the first and second session, I was able to calm down and remind myself that I knew
the information and had read the techniques. It also was nice to have this experience with having
someone to look over, be there for questions or clarification before having a full time job.
I enjoyed the assignment and could see myself doing this as a career. I would have to
decide if I was willing to go back for a second master degree in counseling. The career field that
I am interested in does correspond to career counseling even though it is more advising then
counseling. It would be a decision to make down the road and after having time in the career
field. I learned a lot from this case consultation that I can use in my future career as an academic
advisor.
