Subject Area (s)
Pre-Kindergarten
Grade Level
Math:
M-4K-4.1 Identify two-dimensional shapes: oval circle, square,
(Curriculum Standards)
triangle and rectangle.
M-4K-4.2 Represent simply two-dimensional geometric shapes
In class we have been discussing the basic shapes and how they
Description and Background are formed. From this previous knowledge we will be discussing
Information
the different places we see this shapes.

Lesson Objectives

Students will identify shapes and their names.

Students will identify the shapes of common objects.

Varying Objectives for

Individuals Needs

Statement of Purpose

Higher Order Questions:

How do you draw/create a (state the shape) on the
whiteboard?
Describe what a (state the shape) looks like?
How is a rectangle different than a square?
Without knowing the names of the shapes, children will not be
able to do geometry, or any other activities that depend upon
knowing the shapes and being able to create them, such as
guided drawing and many other fun art projects. Learning the

numbers and shapes in preschool is also important because it

helps the children develop their visual perception as well.

Materials and Resources

Anticipatory Set

Shape templates
Construction Paper - 9" x 12" (variety of colors)
Whats My Shape? reproducible
Chart paper
Scissors
Marker
Glue
Smart-Board
Internet Connection

Watch a YouTube video of shapes and . After you have watched

the video, ask students to name the shapes that they saw in the
video (square, triangle, rectangle, circle, and oval). Explain to
students that there is a mathematical name for the diamond. It is
called a rhombus. Show the shapes and inform the student that
we will be focusing on certain shapes today.

Part II: IMPLEMENTATION

Pre-assessment

Get the students to identify and describe the different shapes in

the video as they watch it.

Teacher Modeling or
Demonstration

Review shapes using whiteboard. Hold up shape and describe

characteristics

Guided Practice

Checking for Understanding

Independent Practice

http://www.turtlediary.com/kindergarten-games/mathgames/learn-shapes.html
This website is an interactive site that demonstrates each object
being discussed, then it gives an activity for the students to
complete.
To check for understanding and make sure everyone is on track, I
will call on students randomly to answer questions throughout the
lesson.
I will post each shape on a poster board for each child see
clearly. I will review each shape again for the students then I will
send the students on a shape hunt. The purpose and goal of
the shape hunt is seeing if the students could identify different
shapes. As they bring their findings to me I will have a checklist to

mark if the brought the correct shape.

Closure

Explain that many common objects that they are familiar with form
some of the shapes that were discussed in class. A video will be played
and the students will have to get into buzz groups to discuss the video
and come up with different objects that are the shapes we talked about
whether it is in the home or any where else.

Assessment
(attach to lesson plan)

Extension Activities

Technology

Students will bring items from home that is one of the shapes that we
talked about in class. We will the discuss the purpose of this object or
how this object is used in the house.

I will incorporate two interactive websites that will reiterate what

was taught. One of the websites contains a matching activity for
the kids to do as a class or individually.
The Arts: make a shape booklet.
Health: foods of the different shapes we discussed

Connection Across the

Curriculum

Physical Education: students could play twister with shapes

Science: shapes in the night sky
Language: Books
Social Studies: the different road signs

PART III: REFLECTION ( Complete JOURNAL RESPONSE after individual lesson

presentation) ** Submit next class after presentation.

Strengths

The overall lesson went amazing. The students really enjoyed the
lesson and it kept their attention the entire time. The students
respected me and they were well behaved. The students were
showing understanding and raising their hands to give steps
when prompted. A few students were allowed to come to the
board to show what they learned. Another strength of the lesson
taught was that there was student engagement that required
students to keep their thinking caps on, which was definitely the
most important strength.

Weaknesses

Suggestions for
Improvement

I felt like my assessment was a little to challenging for the

students. I should have had better planning when using the
technology. It took up to much time trying to get the smart board
to work. A weakness was that there was too much teacher talk
and the students didnt seem to have a chance to process their
data by the end of the class and get to a deeper understanding of
the fundamental concept. Another weakness is that I didnt ask
enough challenging questions. I only tested their memory.
I would have said something to introduce the next activity. I would
have also checked completion of previous task. I most
importantly I would have check all technology prior to the lesson
to ensure that it will be ready for the lesson.
