Title of activity: Understanding and tracking the Antarctica ozone hole

Concept covered in activity: That ozone protects us from radiation
Grade level or other prerequisites for activity. 9th grade
Standards:
Colorado: 3.4 High School (Climate is the result of energy transfer among interactions
of the atmosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere, and biosphere)
Learning objective:
When presented with data about ozone depletion students will be to generate graphs from
the data and interpret trends with 100% accuracy.
Materials:
Ozone power point

Ozone follow along sheet

Projector and speakers

Internet access

Ozone activity sheet

Colored pencils

Instructional planning:
I need to make sure that there are plenty of activity sheets and follow along sheets for the
class. Also I need to access Youtube so check for internet access prior to starting lesson. Review
power point so that I can give an interrupted lecture smoothly. My whole lesson involves
technology so make sure that I have a hard copy of power point in case something goes wrong.
Procedure/activity
Student Activity
Engage

Students will answer the warm up question

Watch short video over ozone and
participate in whole class discussion.

Teacher Activity
Introduce learning target and material for
the day.
Prior to watching video questions:
What is ozone?
Why is it important?
How might life on earth be different if

we had no ozone?
Explore

Students will participate in a quick write.

Facilitate discussion after video

What connections did you have to this

video? What do you challenge in the video?
Explain

Students will complete follow along sheet as

we go through power point and will answer
questions as they are presented by the
teacher.
Participate in Think-Pair-Share for small
group discussions

Elaborate

Students will work on activity sheet

Present students with information by

facilitating interrupted lecture
Ask questions as material is presented to
check for understanding.
Review follow along sheet to ensure

Talk to students as they work. Check for

understanding of the material in the lab
activity.
Answer any questions that they have.
Take this time to make connections with
the students.
What trends are they seeing in data?

Evaluate

What five words would you use to describe

ozone layer? Explain and justify your
choices

Collect work and lead the five words

activity on the board.

Hand in activity for grade when finished.

Assessment
Formative:
Informal: warm up, questioning students, follow along work sheet
Formal: Ozone activity sheet
Summative: None
Rubrics for grading: None

Anticipated misconceptions/alternative conceptions:

I think that the biggest misconception is students are going to think that there is a spot in
the ozone layer with no ozone. This is not the case it is just a thinner layer. There is still ozone
present at this location it is just very thin.
Accommodations/modifications:
For students that would need to be pusher further. I would have them get on the internet
and find an ozone simulator or a NASA database and see what the current statues of the ozone
hole is. They could present their findings to the class and any information they found while
researching with topic.
If students are unable to write on the follow along sheet they will be given the power
point presentation with words missing the students would then be able to just fill in the blanks
which would serve the same purpose as the follow along sheet.
