3. Discuss the importance of respecting diversity and having cultural

competence when working in the community
As we have been taught in Nursing Theory class, culture has a strong impact
on our beliefs about health care. Thus, as a student nurse, I have come to realize its
high importance in working in the community in order for me to provide safe,
meaningful and effective care. The seniors that participated in the activity program
at Villa Colombo where I served are mostly Catholic Italians cultural background.
They speak mainly Italian and at first were not happy that I did not speak their
language. However, by my third week, they had started warming up to me and I had
started to pick up few vocabularies as well. Whenever they were playing Italian
music, I danced along with them.
I remember one day, when Audrey, the recently hired Recreational Activity
personnel, who is of Jamaican background, was to organize Bowling for some of the
seniors of a wing. They refused to come to the activity room. Having studied their
cultural behavior as an insider observer, I suggested to her to put the seniors
favorite Italian music. She did; and within five minutes, the room was filled up so
much that we had to ask the Personal Support Workers to turn back due to fire code
safety. Similarly, when there was movie and snacks program, we had to change
the theme to movie and Espresso (caf); and as predicted we had a larger than
normal turn out for the program.
In conclusion by respecting diversity and having cultural competences while
working in the community, one will be able to have a holistic, clientcentered and
successful community practices.

4. Appreciated the significance of the role of community services

Volunteering in a community center such as the Villa Colombo Services for
seniors is very rewarding and appreciated. I got to give my time and talents to the
services of the seniors. It made me to appreciate all that we were taught about older
adults and frailty in Developmental Psychology. Majority of these seniors also have
some kind of dementia. During the individual programming, some will have
reminiscence about their earlier days. I also learned how to make Italian Pizzas from
ready-made dough. It is also appreciated as I realize one day, I will age as well.
Moreover, seniors from Villa Colombo really benefit daily from the various
activities they gain from both their day care programs or after supper activities to
stimulate their senses and physical movements. Adult day care programs provide

daily supervision, social activities, and ADL assistance for older adults who may be
physically or cognitively.
Another importance of community services is when educating clients on health,
one is able to give referral or direct clients to possible available services in the
community for the clients benefits.
6. Describe the roles of members of the inter-professional and/or health care
team as these relate to the community practice setting.
Based on my discussion with few of the staff, most of those who organize
activities with the seniors studied Activity and Gerontology or a rehabilitation
course. PSWs, social workers, and nurses also play a role. For instance, we usually
find their names on their wheel chairs or other mobility devices. However, on this
one occasion, we were not sure, so we asked the PSW to identify the residence in
order for us to mark the attendance. The RPN nurses also come over to give
medication and explain any special information we need about the client.
The social worker is able to identify residents, who need more one on one
interaction. There are cleaners, volunteers (like me) and drivers who play their role
professionally in order to make the program successful. Moreover, being Italian
community, we have standby Italian translators to ease the communication with
residents who only speak Italian.

9. Utilize health-teaching strategies in the community practice setting to

support healthy lifestyle choices and to enhance client learning.
During the course of my volunteer, I use various strategies to promote wellness
mental and physical being. For instance, a woman during a Bingo game, suddenly
remember her only daughter / child who recently passes away. I had to offer my
shoulder for her to cry. After she was a bit calm, I explained to her how her daughter
is now in a better place and that she would want the mom to always be happy. This
seems to help as it brought joy to her face.
We mostly use hygienic products such as hairbrush and salon gift cards, as
prizes for our bingo games and other competitive activities. We use a lot of Italian
music to encourage relaxation and social interaction among the seniors. The ones
who are able to move around without a mobility device are encouraged to help serve
refreshments and clean up after to encourage physical mobility.
Finally, we bake / cook every Wednesdays. During this activity, we encourage
the senior resident participants to work on the recipes once their hand hygiene has
been performed. This particular teaching is both ways, I learn to cook Italian dishes as
well.
