Process Components
*Anticipatory Set
Student will be asked to participate in a walkabout. At each station they will be asked to write down
what they know about the objects. This will serve as a pre-assessment as well.
*State the Objectives (grade-level terms)
Today we are going to begin studying geometric figures.
*Instructional Input or Procedure
In everyday life, we use geometry: the study of shapes, whether we realize it or not. There are
shapes and figures everywhere we look. Today we are going to look at some of the most basic
geometric figures. But first I want us to watch a video from our friends at Brain Pop. (Play video).
Once video is over, discuss what we observed in the walkabout.
Hand out flip charts and model for students on the board what we are going to be writing on them.
Level 1: POINT- An exact location in space with no length or width.
Level 2: LINE- A collection of points going on and on forever in both directions
Level 3: LINE SEGMENT- Part of a line; has two endpoints and includes all of the points in between.
Level 4: RAY- Part of a line; has one endpoint and continues on forever in one direction.
Level 5: ANGLE- Two rays that have a common endpoint.

*Modeling (I do)
The teacher will model how to fill out the flip chart, including diagrams and definitions for each
figure.
The teacher will model how figures are named and the different forms they may come in.
*Check for Understanding
The teacher will check for understanding by asking questions and using response cards throughout
instruction see practice problems.

5 min

*Guided Practice (We do)

The teacher will walk through the process of identifying the figures and naming them with the
class.
*Independent Practice (You do)

5 min

2 min

The teacher will have the class use their slates as response cards to name the figures in a find
it, hide it, show it game.
Assessment
Students will be formatively assessed during their independent practice and on their ability to
complete the sort. The hook will serve as a pre-assessment for the unit and used to guide
differentiated instruction at a later date.
Homework:
Draw a..
Dot-to-Dot and Beyond!
*Closure
Students will complete a sort of the figures at close of lesson (pg 14)
Differentiation Strategies (enrichment, accommodations, remediation, or by learning style).
Auditory (class discussions), visual (problems on slates, Brain Pop video, diagrams on board),
kinesthetic (flip chart) presentations throughout.
Classroom Management Issues (optional)
Be very clear on instructions involving the walkabout.

Lesson Critique. To be completed following the lesson. Did your students meet the objective(s)? What part of the lesson
would you change? Why?
The students met the objectives for the lesson. They are beginning to be able to identify examples of the different geometric figures
and draw examples of the figures. They use their aids for the first day of practice and will be able to completely meet the objective by
end of unit.
