CourseDescription
Todevelopadvancedcompetenciesinskillandknowledgeforacareerintheearlychildhoodfieldstudentswillspenda7
weekperiodinanearlylearningfacility.Thisculminatingfieldexperienceallowsthestudenttoapplyhis/her
understandingofdevelopmentallyappropriatepracticeinearlylearningsettings.Studentswillshowprofessional
understanding,comprehensivecurriculumandenvironmentalplanningandinsightintothecomplexitiesoftheroleofan
EarlyChildhoodEducator.

LearningOutcomes
Uponsuccessfulcompletionofthiscourse,studentswillbeableto:
1. Determinechildren'sinterestsandtheoriesthroughintentionalobservationswhichwillbelinkedtoongoingdaily
curriculumplanningshowingathoroughunderstandingofchilddevelopment
2. Designcreativeandinspiringearlylearningenvironmentsthatareageanddevelopmentallyappropriate.
3. Preparedocumentationthatshowsthepathwaysofchildren'slearning.
4. Initiateandmaintainresponsiverelationshipswithindividualchildren,groupsofchildren,families,coworkersand
thewiderchildcarecommunity.
5. Createandmaintainsafeandhealthyenvironmentswhichbestmeettherequirementsofcurrent
legislation,regulatorybodies,andprogrampolicies.
6. Demonstrateprofessionalcommunicationskills(written,oralandnonverbalskills)thatwillbereflectedinall
documentationandcorrespondencewithchildren,families,coworkers,collegefacultyandevaluators,and
individuals/agencies.
7. Applyapersonalphilosophyofearlylearningthatisbasedonsoundethicalandprofessionalstandards.
8. Actinamannerconsistentwithethicalprinciplesoffairness,equality,anddiversity.
9. Demonstratephysical,mentalandemotionalhealth.
Prerequisite:Forthiscourse,studentsarerequiredtoattendthe2dayorientationworkshop,havesuccessfullymetall
learningoutcomesandexpectations,andsuccessfullycompletetedallevalutationsandassessmentsintheFLPL58
course,priortothisfinal4thsemesterplacement.
Apassinggradewillbeissuedtoallstudentsthathavecompletedallevaluationsandassessmentpieces,andmetthe
fieldplacementexpectationsandlearningoutcomesthatarerequireduponthemid/finalevaluationintheFLPL58/59
Manual.
NOTE:UnsuccessfulstudentswishingtocontinueintheECEprogramwillhavenomorethan2attemptstodoso.All
returninguppersemesterstudentsforthiscoursemustcompletethe2dayorientaionworkshop,aswellasFLPL58and
FLPL59consecutivlyupontheirreturntotheECEprogram.

ProgramStandards
TheMinistryofTraining,CollegesandUniversitiesoverseesthedevelopmentandthereviewofstandardsforprogramsof

andmustassiststudentstoachievetheseessentialoutcomes.
ThiscoursecontributestoProgramStandardsasdefinedbytheMinistryofTraining,CollegesandUniversities(MTCU).
Programstandardsapplytoallsimilarprogramsofinstructionofferedbycollegesacrosstheprovince.Eachprogram
standardforapostsecondaryprogramincludesthefollowingelements:
Vocationalstandards(thevocationallyspecificlearningoutcomeswhichapplytotheprogramofinstructionin

Essentialemployabilityskills(theessentialemployabilityskillslearningoutcomeswhichapplytoallprogramsof
instruction)and
Generaleducationrequirement(therequirementforgeneraleducationinpostsecondaryprogramsofinstruction
thatcontributetothedevelopmentofcitizenswhoareconsciousofthediversity,complexityandrichnessofthe
humanexperienceand,thesocietyinwhichtheyliveandwork).

Standardsforprofessionalbehaviourandconductwhileonplacementhasbeenthoroughlydiscussedinpreplacement
workshopsandfieldpreparationclasses.Ethicaldecisionmakingwhileonplacementisexpected.Failuretoexhibit
competenciesineitheroftheseareaswillresultinremovalfromplacement.
StudentsarerequiredtopurchaseaplacementnametagfromtheCollegebookstore.AFlemingECESTUDENTname
tagtemplatewillbeprovidedforyouattheorientationworkshop.Studentsmustweartheirnametagwhileatplacement.
Studentsareexpectedtofollowprofessionaldresscodepracticesasdeemedappropriatebyyourhostsitesupervisor.
Professionalandappropriatedresscodewillbemonitoredbyyourhosteducator/collegeevaluatorandismandatoryforall
fieldplacementstudentsintheECEprogramatFlemingCollege.
Inorderforstudentstosuccessfullypassthisplacementtheymustnothavegradesinthe"emergingskills"category
uponthefinalevaluation.Ifthisisthecasethehosteducatorandcollegeevaluatorwilldecideifthelearningexpectations
notbeingmet,warrantarepeatoftheplacementinordertoachievesuccess.
Uppersemesterreturningstudents(2ndattempt)mustnothave"emergingskills"uponthemidtermevaluationorwill
beremovedfromplacement.
Studentswillberequiredtotraveltotheirplacements.Itistheresponsibilityofeachstudenttomakehisorherowntravel
arrangementsandcoveranyadditionalcosts.

PriorLearningandAssessmentandRecognition(PLAR)
PLARusestoolstohelplearnersreflecton,identify,articulate,anddemonstratepastlearningwhichhasbeenacquired
throughstudy,workandotherlifeexperiencesandwhichisnotrecognizedthroughformaltransferofcreditmechanisms.
PLARoptionsincludeauthenticassessmentactivitiesdesignedbyfacultythatmayincludechallengeexams,portfolio
presentations,interviews,andwrittenassignments.Learnersmayalsobeencouragedandsupportedtodesignan
individualdocumentationpackagethatwouldmeetthelearningrequirementsofthecourse.Anystudentwhowishesto
haveanypriorlearningacquiredthroughlifeandworkexperienceassessed,soastotranslateitintoacollegecredit,may

Itistheresponsibilityofthestudenttoretainthiscourseoutlineforfuturereference.Courseoutlinesmayberequiredto
supportapplicationsforadvancedstandingandcredittransfertoothereducationalinstitutions,portfoliodevelopment,
PLARandaccreditationwithprofessionalassociations.
LATEPOLICIES
DUEDATES:Allassessments(fieldplacementformsandevaluationsasoutlinedintheFLPL58/59manualaccordingto
dropboxfoldersprovidedonD2L))aredueontheirstatedduedateandtimeunlessthestudenthasmadespecific
arrangementswiththecollegeevaluatorPRIORtotheduedate.Makeuparrangementsformissedassessmentsare
normallynotallowed.However,intheeventofdocumentedillnessorpersonalcircumstances,whichprohibitthestudent
fromcompletingtheassessment,makeupprovisionsmaybeprovided.MakeuparrangementswillONLYbeprovidedif
thestudentcommunicatestheircircumstancestothefacultymemberINADVANCEofthescheduledcompletiontimeor
withvaliddocumentationinthecaseofanemergency.Consistentlatenesswhileonplacementisunacceptableandwill
bedealtwithonanindividualbasis.
FieldWorkCompletion:Ongoingevaluationcanbeexpectedinregardsthestudentscontinuedattentiontofeildwork
tasksandexpectations.Ifastudentisnotcompletingtheirfieldtasksasrequired,thehostsitemaychoosetoterminate
theplacementasaresultofthestudent'sbehaviour.Similarily,theCoordinator,inconjuctionwiththeCollegeEvaluator
andHostEducator,mayterminatetheplacementifitisdeemedthatthestudentisnotfulfillingthestatedexpectations
causingconcernfortheHostSiteandHostEducator.
