The most common type of fluxgate magnetometer is the parallel detector shown in
Figure 1. As previously stated, the excitation coils supply an alternating current that
produces a magnetic field, which changes the permeability of the core, and therefore
saturates it. The relative permeability of a material is given by

Where o = 4x10-7 is the permeability of free space and D is the electric displacement
field, which relates the permittivity of a medium with electric field. For a linear,
isotropic material, this relation is given by equation
