Playing status is not just about social standing or occupation, a character


might play high-status even though their social standing is technically lower
than their scene partner. Human interaction is never status neutral.

PROMPT: WHAT IS STATUS? DEFINE VOCABULARY.
1. Boals Chair
- Group divided in two, actors and audience. Chair in space, ask one actor to
enter space and using chair, take a position of power. Rest of actor come in
one at a time, making additional choices of power or status. Ask audience
following questions:
Who has the most power? Who has the least power?
Who has the highest status? Who has the lowest status?
Who is pulling focus and what does that do to the stage picture?
Repeat with audience becoming actors and vice versa.
(15 - 20 mins)
2. Status Transfer - **Visual/pictoral guide on board that shows status
transfer
- Face a partner, and practice maintaining eye contact, playing alternately
high and low. (5mins)
- Now using your whole body, and having a normal conversation with your
partner, start with one person as high, one person as low, and gradually
transfer to the opposite status. (5mins)
- Ask for volunteer pairs, whole class watches, give pair characters and place
where one is high, one is low, and improv a scene in which they have to
justify a status transfer.
(20 - 25 mins)
3. Scene Rehearsal - **Instructions on board**
Run the scene at least 3 times:
1st run: One character plays low status the whole time and the other
character plays high status the whole time
2nd run: Swap
3rd run: Play around with changing your status throughout the scene.
