Hybrid Learning in

Northeastern Pennsylvania
Cara Devine Hybrid Learning Coach LIU18

Hybrid learning has allowed me to truly tailor my instruction

to suit every students' unique learning needs. Using flexible
groupings, I can make the direct instruction area a time to
target specific strengths and weaknesses in order to push
students forward in their learning. The collaborative area
promotes real-life "soft" skills centered in authentic tasks, and
the independent area is an opportunity for students to be
assessed, provide writing opportunities, and preview content
in order to prepare them for direct instruction. I can't imagine
going back to a more traditional teaching approach having
implemented hybrid learning into my classroom.

PA Hybrid Learning Institute

The

Pennsylvania Hybrid Learning Institute (PA

HLI) is an organized group of teachers,
administrators and subject-matter experts
seeking to create a more student-centered
approach to learning. It provides a step-by-step
process for schools to plan, launch and operate
new hybrid programs and establishes the regional
infrastructure to support them.

What is Hybrid Learning in NEPA?

Our partnership provide districts a full system of
support from implementation planning, design,
technical assistance, ongoing professional
development and instructional coaching in addition
to supports to monitor the programs effectiveness.
So what IS hybrid learning?
A Blended learning system that uses data to
regularly differentiate and rotate students among
learning stations to enhance best practices in
teaching in learning.

Small Group
Instruction

I greatly enjoy
working with a small
group of children at
one time. It makes it
easier to see who
needs additional help.
My class really enjoys
the collaborative group
since they get to work
with their peers.

I feel like I can get to know my

students better because of the small
group at the direct station. I like that
it teaches independence and puts
them in charge of their learning. I like
the variety in the classroom that
meets all of the instructional needs
and individual needs.

Data Driven Decision

Making

The independent station often

features a robust digital content
that allows teachers to track
students learning through
formative and summative
assessments.

Getting meaningful data is the

one of the keys to changing
instruction to improve learning.

Hybrid Learning has forced me to reevaluate

how I instruct my students. I am constantly
adjusting and modifying my lessons to reach all
of my students. I enjoy the small group
instruction in our Direct Rotation, the hands-on
possibilities in the Collaborative Rotation, and
the research component of the Independent
Rotation.

Personalized Learning

Students are in
charge of their own
learning.

My kids are more excited about

learning and they user their time
more effectively because they are
focused. I dont feel like I have
lost anyone.

Students truly feel

invested in their learning.

Students enjoy the format.

Prefer Hybrid to direct
instruction.

Differentiated Instruction

Using the hybrid

model is one of the
best and easiest
ways to
differentiate your
instruction.

There is no
wasted
instructional
time,
students work
bell-to-bell.

Students are more engaged

Student Engagement

I have seen some positive

impacts with the hybrid model
in the classroom. It gives the
students options on how they
do their work, and it allows
students to work at their own
pace.

Interventions and Supports

Hybrid Learning is absolutely

amazing! It allows my students to
learn in a rigorous, interactive
environment, geared for success in the
st
21 Century.

Final Take Away

The model we use and train teachers in

allows us to standardize practices within
classrooms that enable and enhance
best practices while allowing the most
important part of the classroom to
remain the teacher.
