1. List specific skills. Avoid generalizations and be very specific about your skills.
List skills which can be applied to various types of positions. For example,
excellent written skills is general, written three instruction manuals on X
systems is specific.
2. Go beyond the obvious. Get past the job functions and look at transferable skill
sets. These include:
Communication the ability to express and interpret ideas, convey information.
This would be specifics on writing concisely, speaking to groups, expressing
ideas and suggestions, editing information, etc.
Research and Planning the ability to search for specific information and
determine an action plan. Give specifics on forecasting, predicting, identifying
issues, finding alternatives, solving problems, setting goals, developing
strategies, etc.
Human Relations the ability to use interpersonal skills to relate to people,
support them and solve conflicts. Give specifics on listening, delegating,
developing rapport, building teams, etc.
Management, Leadership the ability to supervise and guide others towards
successful completion of goals. Include specifics on selling ideas, making
decisions, managing conflict, coordinating projects, etc.
3. Be totally honest. Remember, not a single person is good at everything! Be
sure to list weaknesses, this will make you aware of them. In addition, it will let
you determine how to use your strengths to compensate or what steps you can
take to become more skilled. There is always value in knowing what you are
good at doing and where your weaknesses lie.
