April showers bring May flowers. April also brings red umbrellas in worship as powerful reminders of the
showers of blessings we receive as we wait for the promised Holy Spirit along with the disciples after the
resurrection of their spiritual leader, healer, and friend.
The spring showers remind us of our baptism, of being cleansed from all that would hold us downour
sinfulness, the consequences of sin (ours and others), the darkness of the present age, and the finality of death.
Water-washed, we find renewal. We are growingspiritual, physically, and in number. We welcome new faces
each week in worship and congregational activities, as friends along the Way.
I hope you will take some time to sit under the red umbrellas in the sanctuary this month and next as we slow
down, step back, and focus on our prayer life. Becoming what God intends is a never-ending process, our
sanctification continues by the power of the Holy Spirit, just as a rock is polished by the washing of the river.
I hope you will take some time to reflect upon how Warren First and her ministries have influenced, shaped, and
directed your faith journey. And I hope you will spend time in prayer for yourself, those you love, and for the
Church. Listening. And then sharing, what you hear and see and learn.
On May 31st we will celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit and begin a new journey of becoming disciples. We
will celebrate the re-dedication of the lower level for ministry and mission, making and sending disciples to make
and send disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. We will celebrate the space we make for
all people to know God, forgiveness, and freedom through Jesus Christ. And we will celebrate our future as
Gods laborers in the harvest.
By the time you receive this newsletter, Warren First will be honored by the City of Warren as one of the
Volunteer of the Year recipients on April 23rd at City Hall. Church Council will meet to plan our community
outreach events, further extending our impact and influence on the lives of those near and far. Missions will
continue to invite speakers and create events to help us learn about the needs of our neighbors and how we can be
an answer to prayer in very real, practical ways out of our abundance. We have been blessed with so much
time, talent, and treasureto make ministry happen.
This is your invitation to come close through worship, prayer, study, and service as we witness the power of
resurrection in our lives and the lives of those around us. This is your invitation to pray about ways your
passions, your gifts, and the needs of the body of Christ and the world may come together.
Come learn about how God answers prayer through The United Methodist Church on April 26 as we hear from
Karen Plants and the Brightmoor Campus of Redford Aldersgate UMC. Work and learn at The Methodist
Childrens Home on May 16. Bring your used treasures to the rummage sale and watch how our abundance
makes a difference for the ministry of our Covenant Partner, Paul Webster at Mujila Falls in Zambia. Imagine
how a few hours of volunteering for Sunday School or Vacation Bible School can shape a life for Christ, even
your own.
Frederick Buechner writes, The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the worlds
deep hunger meet.
As we celebrate the Holy Spirit, and all the gifts she brings to our lives, may we also celebrate how we put them
to work, for the glory of God.
Yours in the journey, Pastor Susan

LAYETTES
It is time again to begin shopping, sewing, knitting, crocheting, etc. for items to be included in the layettes to be
assembled by United Methodist Women. For many years the layette project has been a means by which we are
able to help new moms in our community.
New mothers who come to the hospital without proper clothing for the newborn to go home in will be given one of
these layettes. The needs of these recipients are determined by staff at hospitals, clinics, and social service agencies in the area.
Anyone too busy to sew or shop can put money or a check (made out to the U.M.W.) in an envelope marked
Layettes, and the phantom shoppers (who qualify for senior discounts) will go into action.
A pack-n-play is located in the Narthex to place your purchases or completed items in.
You may want to take advantage of sales in progress now. (Please remove all tags.)
The deadline for donations is May 3, 2015. If you have any questions,
please see Pat Murphy, Dodie Drath, or Jo Ann Snyder.
Each layette consists of (size 0-12 months) 1 sleeper, 1 pair booties or socks,
1 sweater set or playsuit, 1 receiving blanket, 1 bib, 6 disposable diapers,
1 afghan or crib blanket, 1 onesie, and 1 bottle.
Thank you!
