CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.8.3.

A - Engage and orient the reader by

establishing a context and point of view and introducing a narrator and/or
characters; organize an event sequence that unfolds naturally and logically.
The brainstorming lesson accomplishes this standard
because we will be talking about perspectives during this lesson,
and they will learn how to create a point-of-view, character, and
plot through brainstorming. We will further this knowledge when
we have the full lesson on plot because they will then plan the
sequencing of their narratives.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.8.3.B - Use narrative techniques, such as
dialogue, pacing, description, and reflection, to develop experiences, events,
and/or characters.
There will be many narrative techniques covered in
this unit. The lesson on characters and dialogue will help the
students understand how to use those two elements to their
benefit while writing, and they will learn to make their dialogue
believable in relation to their character.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.8.3.D - Use precise words and phrases, relevant
descriptive details, and sensory language to capture the action and convey
experiences and events.
The lesson plan about figurative language will fully
prepare the students for using sensory language to convey the
elements of their plot. They will learn to use figurative language
to their benefit to create an interesting narrative. They will also
have a mini-lesson on avoiding dead words so they can have a
wider variation in word choice.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.8.4 - Produce clear and coherent writing in which

the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose,
and audience. (Grade-specific expectations for writing types are defined in
standards 1-3 above.)
The full lesson on organization will guide the
students in writing a clear essay that flows easily for the reader.
Students will learn to arrange their story in an organized
sequence that will make sense to the reader.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.8.5 - With some guidance and support from peers
and adults, develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising,
editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach, focusing on how well purpose
and audience have been addressed. (Editing for conventions should
demonstrate command of Language standards 1-3 up to and including grade
8 here.)
Students will learn this CCSS when they have their
lessons on self-editing and peer-editing. Both of these are mini
lessons designed to provide students the skills to revise and edit
their writing. They will also get the opportunity to revise their
rough draft so they can practice this skill.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.8.8 - Gather relevant information from multiple
print and digital sources, using search terms effectively; assess the
credibility and accuracy of each source; and quote or paraphrase the data
and conclusions of others while avoiding plagiarism and following a standard
format for citation.
Students will accomplish this CCSS through the
media center lesson. They will learn to how to search properly
using the correct terms so they can find their best resource.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.8.9 - Draw evidence from literary or informational

texts to support analysis, reflection, and research.
This is also accomplished through the media center
lesson because it teaches the students how to use the librarys
computer system to find resources for their narratives.
