Unit Title: Circles

Name: Tuyen Le

Content Area: Geometry

Grade Level: 9-10

CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):wit

G-C1. Prove that all circles are similar

G-C2. Identify and describe relationships among inscribed angles, radii, and chords.

G-C5. Find arc lengths and areas of sectors of circles. Derive using similarity the fact that the length of the arc intercepted by an angle is
proportional to the radius, and the define the radian measure of the angle as the constant of proportionality; derive the formula for the area
of a sector.

Big Ideas:

In this unit, students will prove that all circles are similar. They will study the relationships among inscribed angles, radii, and chords.
Lastly, student will learn how to find arc lengths and areas of sectors of circle. This unit will help students connect mathematics to real
world application. For instance, how are circles utilized in real life? (example: tire, ferris wheel, pizza, etc)

Unit Goals and Objectives:

Students will be able to proof that all circles are similar.

Students will be able to recognize and define a circle and it's parts: radius, diameter, central angle, major and minor arcs and
adjacent arcs.
Students will be able to find the measure of central angles and arcs of circles.
Students will be comfortable using a compass to draw circles and arcs.
Student will be able to find the center of a circle and compute the radius.
Students will be able to recognize the relationships that the different arcs have to the circle and to one another.
Students will work with the properties of circles in real world application.

Unit Summary:

In this unit plan, we will explore circle and its parts. We will learn how to find the radius, diameter, central angle, chords, major and
minor arcs of a circle. This unit requires students to work on the Webercise assignment. The Webercise contains many set of questions in
which students will need to visit four different website. For instance, students will work in group and will be asked to watch a video
about circles. Then, students have to apply what they learn and connect circles to real life application.

Assessment Plan:

Entry-Level:

Formative:

True/False Statements - What is true or

false about a circle?

Summative:

Quizlet Flashcards: Circle

and its parts.
Formula Sheet: Students will
be given the formula for radius,
diameter, circumference, and area of
a circle. Student will be given three
problems and they will use the given
formula to solve for the problem by
independently.
Group Work: Review the
problems in group of 4. Then in a
group, students come up with a
question and provide steps on
solving the problem.
Mid-level assessment:
Students will giving a quiz in which
they have to identify and label the
circle and its parts.

Group Presentation: How are

circles utilized in real life?
Exam: Final exam on the
whole unit.

Lesson Activities:
For this lesson, students will be ask to complete 3
steps in the ascending order relating to circles.
Step 1: Students will watch the 4 videos and create
a concept map regarding these videos with a their
group. The concept map should be use to organize
students main ideas, and topics, and sub-topics
about the videos. The 3 main ideas should be
finding arc length, finding the area of a sector, and
similarity of circles.
Step 2: Students are required to use Geogebra to
construct two circles from the given problem. Then
students are required to prove and explain that a
circle with radius 3 and center (2,2) is similar to a
circle with radius 6 and center (5,3).
Step 3: Students are required to work in a group to
complete the summary worksheet. Students will
need to fill in the blank and answer the reflection
question at the end. This will help students to
review all the steps in this lesson.
