The Short-Eared Owl!

This endangered owl lives in all of our ecozones. It lives mainly in prairies and
wetlands and bogs. This owl is a very nomadic bird that breeds in places like
British Columbia during the summer and can migrate all the way down to Mexico
during the winter. Their brown-black feathers provide the species with good
camouflage. Many coastal wetlands along the Pacific Ocean and grasslands
have been destroyed for urban growth and farms. Wetlands have been drained
and agricultural development is increasing. This bird has been slowly decreasing
in numbers and its population within Canada was recorded at around 3,500 birds.
Its population has declined by about 3% every year in the past 40 years and the
population has dropped 23% in this last decade. The loss of their habitats is the
primary factor in this birdss decline. This bird is a tertiary consumer and is very important to the
food chain. Any animal is important because it keeps the food chain balanced. Without tertiary
consumers, the other consumers population would expand very significantly. We cant have too
many insects in our world and if there are too many primary consumers, there wont be enough
food for everyone. If there is not enough plants, it affects everyone. We can create parks and
protected areas to make sure that birds have a space that can be a safe haven for them. We
can also focus on expanding our urban development within our city limits and not urban sprawl.
