Equipment needed: flip chart, markers
Number of Participants: 14-16
Activity Description: Split the group into 2 teams of 7-8 people per team. It
is good to have each team be a mix of demographics, so that members
contribute songs of various eras and styles. Select a word that is commonly
found in songs such as love, baby, rain, etc. Each team has 10 minutes to
brainstorm as many songs as possible that contain the selected word. The
team with the most songs, not duplicated by other teams, wins the challenge.
Once time is up (5 or 10 min), teams come back together as a group to
compare lists. Every unique song is worth 1 point. Team 1 shares the first
song on their list followed by Team 2. Then teams move on to the 2nd song
on the list so that each team shares 1 song and then passes to the next
team. In order to receive a point, a member of the team must sing the line of
the song containing the buzzword, and each team member must sing at least
one song in order for the team to continue receiving points. Duplicate songs
are canceled out and do not count toward the team total.
Leadership Considerations: Facilitator will explain the rules of the game in
a clear and concise manner, and let participants work together on activity
without helping or interrupting them. Facilitator will decide what team has
won the activity and will debrief the activity when it is over.
Discussion Questions: 1) Did working in a team help you with this activity?
2) Did the activity help you make new friends? 3) What did you benefit from
this game?
Dissociative Amnesia: For a population with Dissociative Amnesia, the
primary goal for TR specialists is to get them to remember certain facets of
their life. This can be accomplished through music, since it is a modality that
nearly everyone enjoys and can be used to access distant memories and
times of a persons life. Since the goal of this activity is for the participant to
come up with songs on their own that contain a particular word, a specific
adaptation that can be done is to play very popular songs from their youth or
current times on a computer in order to facilitate memories and to get the
participant to be able to remember songs for the purpose of the activity.
Intellectual Disability: Adaptations can also be made for participants with
intellectual disabilities. For example, the rules of the game may need to be
explained on a one on one basis in order to ensure he or she has grasped the
concept. In addition, instead of having only one participant sing the lyrics of
the song, the entire group can sing it to enhance cohesion and promote social
skills. Individuals with intellectual disabilities may have trouble coming up
with songs containing only one word, therefore, an adaptation that could be

made is coming up with songs that are related to a specific theme such as
love, celebrations, or religion. This adaptation will make it simpler to come up
with songs and to help out team members. Groups can also be made larger in
order to have extra help.
