Our Solar System: Planets (Inner)

I attained this lesson from teachervision.com

Science
8th Grade
Standard 8-4: 8-4.1 Summarize the characteristics of objects
in the solar system (including planets, moons, asteroids,
comets, and meteors).

First, students will get a refresher on the planets of our solar

Description and Background system which they should have previously learned. Next, we
Information
will begin the new lesson by talking about each planets
name, characteristics, and description with the inner planets.
Lesson Objectives

Varying Objectives for

Individuals Needs

Students will be able to tell vital information and facts on

each of the inner planets contained in our solar system to
help them distinguish each planet from one another.
I will show a slideshow to better explain the content of the planets. I
could try to explain the content slow so the students can
comprehend better for those who are struggling and show visuals.
For students who have already mastered the concept, I can
consistently ask them questions to keep them on their toes and keep
them engaged.
I could let the students who are struggling with English go to a
computer and play a video in their 1st language so they can better
understand if I am not getting through to them.
Students do not necessarily need this content for everyday life.
However, if the students ever take a look in space or look at a

diagram of the solar system, they will be able to assess prior

knowledge after the lesson is taught.
The materials that will be needed for this lesson for the students will
simply be a pencil and paper. The teacher will need a board to write
on, a smart board for the delivery of the lesson, Microsoft
PowerPoint, and worksheets.
I will play a video showing the planets of the solar system to get
their attention.

Part II: IMPLEMENTATION

Pre-assessment

Teacher Modeling or
Demonstration
Guided Practice
Checking for Understanding

Included in the lesson is a strategy called a KWL Chart in which the

K portion is for what students already know. I will give the students
time to write down what they know and get some volunteers to state
what they wrote.
I will read the purpose and objectives of the lesson to the students so
they can know what I expect them to learn by the end of the lesson.
We will go over the PowerPoint I made to deliver content to them.
Also, I will go over the example question on the worksheet.
I would ask questions such as Is anyone having trouble
understanding anything about any of the planets? Would
anybody like to share their most interesting thing they learned
today? To really check for understanding, I will ask questions
pertaining to content I already covered to make sure the
information has stuck to the students.
The students will answer the questions on the worksheet using the
knowledge I just taught them.

Extension Activities

I will ask students to write down in the L portion of the KWL chart
what interesting facts they have learned. Also, I will tell the
students to apply their knowledge when observing the solar system.
I will ask the students if they have a better understanding of the
inner planets after the lesson. I will reinforce information that was
given if no better understanding is present.
The students will complete the KWL Charts I hand them along with
the planets worksheet.
Students can gather their families together and look at the solar
system. Students will be able to distinguish the planets for their
family members. They could ask about some information on a

random planet and my students would be able to tell them

depending on the question asked.

Technology

I will use a computer and Microsoft PowerPoint to discuss the

planets and show facts about the planets along with showing visuals.
I could connect it with a similar lesson that discusses heavily about
other things in the solar system such as asteroids, comets, asteroid
belt, etc. and each planets effect on these terms named.

PART III: REFLECTION ( Complete JOURNAL RESPONSE after individual lesson
presentation) ** Submit next class after presentation.

Strengths

Weaknesses

Suggestions for
Improvement

The KWL Chart I used was a strength of the lesson. It allowed me

to assess prior knowledge from each individual. Another strength
was the visuals I used in the lesson. Using pictures can attract
students attention and keep them engaged in the lesson. Also, there
was hardly any disruption throughout the lesson.
A weakness of the lesson was the checking for understanding
portion. I did not thoroughly ask enough questions to make sure
they understood certain content. Also, I did not vary my question
techniques when I did ask questions. Before I gave explanations, I
could have called on students to tell me why they think something is
the way it is before giving them the answer.
I would have to change my questioning and the fact that my video
was not working. I will also have to come up with a good back up
plan for anticipatory set just incase the planned one does not work
just like it did. Lastly, I need to learn to call on students whos hand
is not raised.
