Lesson Plan

James R. Wallbaum

Subject & Topic: Math 10-1 Adding and Subtracting Fractions w/Like Denominators
Date: 1/22/14
Page: 256

Time Required: 70 mins

Standards:
CC.4.NF.3c Add and subtract mixed numbers with like denominators, e.g., by
replacing each mixed number with an equivalent fraction, and/or by using
properties of operations and the relationship between addition and
subtraction.
CC.4.NF.3d Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of
fractions referring to the same whole and having like denominators, e.g., by
using visual fraction models and equations to represent the problem.
Measurable Educational Learning Objectives:
Students will be able to use models and computational procedures to add and
subtract fractions with like denominators.
Assessment:
Informal assessment during guided practice problems.
Adaptations and Accommodations:
We used two cheat sheets, one to help find the greatest common factor to
simplify the fraction, and one that showed how to simplify the fraction.
The lesson re-teach is on the back of the homework.
Resources:
Projector, white board, cheat sheets, book: Envision Math
Prerequisite Skills:
Fraction concepts, simplifying fractions, greatest common factor
Academic Language:
Numerator, Denominator, Common Denominator
Anticipatory Set:
Basic fraction vocabulary review: Numerator, Denominator, Common
Denominator.

Statement of Objective or Purpose:

You have learned how to add and subtract whole numbers; today you will
learn to add or subtract fractions with like denominators.
Sequence of Activities:

Rocket Math
Teach adding and subtracting with like denominators.
o Make sure to model addition problems that go over 1.
o Make sure to model problems where you have to simplify.
Do some sample problems: pizza, number line, measuring.
Guided practice 1-8. Circulate to assess.
Assign homework 10-1.

Questions to ask:

When do you think you might need to add or subtract fraction amounts?
How would you compare fractions with like denominators?
How would you compare fractions with unlike denominators?

Conclusion and Summary:

Today we learned how to add and subtract fractions with like denominators.
When fractions have like denominators, you simply use the numerators to
add and subtract, while leaving the denominator as a constant.
Self Evaluation and Reflection:
It was evident from the beginning of the lesson that the students didnt have
the prerequisite skills necessary for this lesson, so we spent extra time
cementing their concept of fractions. I made sure that the students grasped
the main concept of the lesson and spent a good amount of time modeling
the skills. Tomorrow I will spend extra time going over homework and
practicing the skill of simplifying fractions especially answers that are
improper fractions. Overall I felt fine in front of the students. I still need to
work on my delivery and adapting to plans as they change in the moment.
