Date: 1/24/14
Time Required: 70 mins

Standards:
CC.6.NS.2 Compute fluently with multi-digit numbers and find common
factors and multiples. Fluently divide multi-digit numbers using the standard
algorithm.
Measurable Educational Learning Objectives:
Students will be able to determine common multiples and least common
multiples of numbers.
Assessment:
Homework 10-2
Adaptations and Accommodations:
There was a handout to help students find the multiples of numbers.
Resources:
Projector, white board, handout, book: Envision Math, homework 10-2
Prerequisite Skills:
Multiplication
Academic Language:
Common Multiple, Least Common Multiple
Anticipatory Set:
Review worksheet on reducing fractions and converting improper fractions to
mixed numbers.
Statement of Objective or Purpose:
You have learned how to multiply to find the multiples of a number. Today
you will learn to find multiples shared by two different numbers.
Sequence of Activities:

Review worksheet.
Develop concept of multiples of a number.

Teach least common multiple.

Model finding least common multiple using page 260 in book.
Model guided practice.
Assign independent practice 12 - 20.
Assess informally as I circulate.
Review independent practice.
Assign homework 10-2.

Questions to ask:

How do you find a multiple of a number?

Will two numbers have more than one common multiple?
Can a pair of numbers have more than one least common multiple?

Conclusion and Summary:

In order to find the least common multiple shared by two numbers, one
simply needs to list the multiples of the numbers until they find a common
one. The least common multiple can never be greater than the product of
the two numbers.
Self Evaluation and Reflection:
Today I thought the lesson went pretty well. My biggest concern was that I
responded too quickly to the students who were understanding the concept.
Those students were vocal because they understood the concept, but there
were some students who had not yet grasped the concept and were at a
disadvantage when I deviated from my plans. The lesson taught me that
while it is important to constantly assess your students understanding, you
need to make sure to assess the whole class, as opposed to the vocal
majority.
