Dr.

Seuss
Unit Lesson Plans
Week of March 16 through March 20 (2015)
Charity A.C. Smoot
Dr. Seuss Week
Grade Level(s): K-5
Subject: Reading

Cross Curricular Subjects: Math

Unit Time Frame: 5 day unit (Approx. 30 minutes each lesson)
Purpose: In recognition of Reading Across America, students will be exposed/introduced to
several Dr. Seuss texts. This Reading unit will not only help students to develop important
language skills, but they will also learn how to be imaginative, creative, and unique.
Student Skills/Goals:

By March 20, 2015, students will participate in turn-taking games/activities (board games, card
games, etc.) with at least (3-5 peers) by maintaining personal space (sitting in his/her chair or carpet
area, not grabbing or touching materials and game pieces of peer/s), following game rules and roles,

and focusing his/her attention (visually referencing the peer/s) for the duration of the game or
activity on (4/5) opportunities.

By March 20, 2015, students will accept a change in routine without displaying maladaptive
behavior (e.g., crying or refusing to participate) and will verbally request a break or adult assistance
if needed in (4) out of (5) opportunities.

By March 20, 2015, students will respond to his/her name and attentional instructions (e.g.
"look", "stop", "wait", "come back") across all environments by looking to the speaker and

complying with the command on (5/5) opportunities.

By March 20, 2015, students will independently engage in and maintain play in an unstructured
setting by interacting with peer group for at least (15) minutes and remaining on play topic on
(4/5) opportunities.

By March 20, 2015, when given (5-10) real-world problems involving multiplying a fraction by
a fraction, a fraction by a mixed number, or a mixed number by a mixed number, labeled fraction
strips and illustrated images of the real-world situations (e.g. picture of a fraction of a pizza pie
being shared with students to represent giving 1/4 of a pizza to 6 students = 1/4 x 6), students will

correctly solve (4 out of 5) problems by using equations, manipulatives, or visual models.

By March 20, 2015, when given (10) multiplication and (10) division word problems within 100
that are broken into (2) parts: a word problem with a picture that represents the numbers and a
number sentence with answers that match each problem, students will correctly match the word

problem to the number sentence and answer scoring (16/20) correct responses in (4 out of 5)
multiplication and division word problem activities.
Common Core Standard(s): (3rd, 4th, 5th grade)
CCSS.3.OA.3

Represent and solve problems involving multiplication and division

Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems in situations involving
equal groups, arrays, and measurement quantities, e.g., by using drawings and equations
with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
CCSS.5.NF.6

Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to multiply and
divide fractions. Solve real world problems involving multiplication of fractions and
mixed numbers, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the
problem.
Safety Precautions for Lesson(s):

Review IEPs
Check for Food Allergies
Students should respect one anothers space and materials; treat others and their things as one
would like to be treated (no throwing, hitting or misuse of classroom supplies!)
Accommodations/ Modifications:

o Use clear, literal, language when talking to the student(s)

o Ensure social and verbal reinforcement is given when student(s) complete the activities
o Individualized assistance/guidance provided (if needed)

Additional Activities/Changes made during the week

Monday

Wing It/Unable to print off worksheets

Didnt Realize Dr. Seuss Books were that lengthy! / Look through book and choose pages to read
Students became irritable
Students lacked attention
Know your students!
Some students dislike getting their hands messy
Time was wasted
All colors were not used, as planned
Good thing to over-plan and have back-up activities
Older students wanted to paint also
Modify assignment (Have older students to paint an ocean scenery that also includes the different types of fish)

Tuesday

Use Skewer Sticks

Holds LifeSaver Gummies in place/Gives it more length
Younger students : Design a red and white hat, similar to the Cat in the Hats hat
Suggestion: Print out a hat template that students can cut out and color
Older students : Cut and Color a red and white hat and bowtie. Paste both items onto a circle, which students

are to design in the resemblance of themselves

Suggestion: Print out a hat, bowtie, and circle template that students can cut out and color

Wednesday

Make all activities outside activities

Change 4th and 5th grade activities

Instead of playing hopscotch using multiples of 3, call out a list of words and have students to respond with a

rhyming word
Students are to only hop inside the box if their word rhymes with the word called out by the teacher
Understand that some students may need further assistance, no matter how simple the activity may be

Thursday

Include the Lorax movie for students to watch

Include other activities for students to do
Color and design a Lorax mustache
Have older students to complete a writing activity, stating how they can save the trees and/or make the
Earth a better place * Overall Message in the Lorax Movie/Book*

Friday

Make dog styled party hats

Suggestion: Pre-cut the materials needed
Have a Scavenger Hunt
Print off doggy bone templates and dog templates
Bones will be used as scavenger hunt clues
Dogs will be placed/hidden around the school
Students are to use the clues to search for the many dogs. These dogs will lead to the big Finale, which is the
Hot-dog Party!
