Extended Studies Express

Mrs. Yawman

Second Grade, Ancient Egypt

Great Start
Wow! I am enjoying your second graders as we
delve into our study of Ancient Egypt. They are an
enthusiastic and curious bunch.
So far
weve studied some Ancient Egyptian artwork
to launch discussions and warm up our brains.
Then we identified where Egypt is in the world
and noticed that the Nile River runs through the
country
which prompted us to research why the Nile
was so important to Ancient Egyptian culture.

Our last few sessions will be
devoted to the final project.
Class Project
Students will act as museum curators to create a
display that teaches something about each
component of civilization as it relates to Ancient
Egypt. The children will work in groups and will
decide whether to represent each component
with a particular artifact or with an interactive
learning activity. Then they will present their
museum displays to their homerooms.
Habits of Mind
During the second half of the school year, Council
Rock is focusing on these Habits of Mind, which
we will explore and reinforce in our extended
studies class:
Persisting
Remaining Open to Continuous Learning
Applying Past Knowledge to New Situations
Thinking Flexibly

Your child also might like to explore this website:

http://www.childrensuniversity.manchester.ac.uk/
interactives/history/egypt/ This is an excellent
interactive site. We will use it a little bit in class,
and it would be fun for your child to spend more
time with it at home.
Powerful Examples of Learning
After each class my goal is to write a
note to one or two students to highlight
examples of powerful learning. I will
send home a copy of the note, and I will keep a
copy to read aloud to the class so that everyone
starts noticing the ways in which we can become
even stronger learners. In particular, I will focus on
habits of mind, the thinking moves that are vital to
develop deep understanding, and behaviors that
help us to be more focused learners.
