THEORY

Chloramphenicol (INN) is an antibiotic useful for the

treatment of a number of bacterial infections. It is
a bacteriostatic; it became available in 1949. It is
considered a prototypical broad-spectrum antibiotic,
alongside the tetracyclines, and as it is both cheap and
easy to manufacture, it is frequently an antibiotic of
choice in the developing world.
Chloramphenicol, also known as chlornitromycin, is
effective against a wide variety of Grampositive and Gram-negative bacteria, including
most anaerobic organisms.
Chloramphenicol reacts with potassium permanganate in
basic medium and green color form, absorbance directly
related to concentration of Chloramphenicol and can be
used for determination of it.

DISCUSSION
The aim of this experiment is
extraction and determination of
chloramphenicol in eye ointment.
Chloramphenicol is a nitro derivative in which
the nitro group attached to an aromatic
moiety, in this experiment we used potassium
permanganate as oxidizing agent and it self
reduce to formation of green colors, and this
reaction occur in basic medium there for we
use sodium hydroxide.
Some factors affect the result such as
concentration of aqueous layer and
temperature.
and may be we had some errors in our
experiment such as personal errors which
include bad working for example we added
15 ml of water three time which must be used
15ml of water one time and another errors in
equipments we couldnt obtain good
absorbance of the sample which prepared and
error in the materials which used.
