QUESTION 2!
!

This magazine is aimed towards the E Deomgraphic Group which are students that are
unemployed so do not earn a lot of money. This magazine wants to subvert stereotype that
teenagers are lazy and so encourages them to go out and listen to music live instead of inside their
homes. It also encourages them to travel by telling them where in England and around the world
they can find Indie music. !

Images show the type of people who read the magazine, go to festivals and concerts and buy their
music in vinyl form. !

The readers of this magazine are very independent and are willing to meet new people through
their favourite genre of indie music. The magazine encourages them to go out and meet new
people through music be it in concerts or photography or social media. Also encourages them to

travel around the world and gives them ideas of what new music to listen to, broadening their
horizons. !

The clothing in this magazine is very simple and things that the reader would wear normally
everyday. Many guitars used as props as thats a very popular instrument used in indie music.
Vinyl records are also featured a lot because thats how many people who listen to indie music buy
their music. The colour scheme is quite grundy with whites and darker pallets such as dark purples
and pinks. !

QUESTION 3!
!

I looked at several different media institutions to find one that would be the right fit to distribute my
magazine. !

I first looked at media company Freestyle Interactive. By looking at their client list I knew that this
wasnt right for my magazine. As you can see they represent banks and car companies, such as
Loyds bank and Volvo. They also represent Lufthansa which is an airline and I dont think a
company which represents these type of companies would be fit to represent a new music
magazine for young people. !

I then looked at Church of London who represent a wide range of media products, however they do
not have any clients that are magazine based. They work with very successful and recognisable
brands such as Google and Adidas but I dont think they would be a good distributor for my
magazine because they have no experience with magazines and they mainly represent big
companies so do not have much experience with new media products. !

I then looked at IPC Media and found that this was another media company which wasnt right for
my magazine. All of the clients at IPC Media are magazines which could be a good reason why to
choose them to represent my magazine, however, they dont have any experience with music
magazines and only represent one, NME. I dont think that my magazine would fit in well as the
majority of the magazines they represent are for middle aged or older people e.g Ideal Home
Magazine. !

Future PLC Media are much more focused on advertisement and gaming magazines such as Play
Station Magazine and XBOX Magazine. I dont think that they would be very good for my indie
music magazine as Future PLC seems to represent quite gamey media products. !

Bauer Media seems to be the best fit for my magazine as it is aimed at a younger audience, and as
you can see from the client list, Bauer represent many young brands such as Q magazine and
4Music. Within their client list theres a very wide range of music based media products such as
radio stations, music video channels and music magazines which would make them perfect to
represent a music magazine as they have lots of experience in that area. From what I can see in
their client list I think that they are missing an indie music magazine and so my magazine would fit
right in.!

QUESTION 4!
!
My target audience is young people aged 16 - 25 who are in education in sixth form or university
that are unemployed or have part-time jobs to earn themselves a living. These people are part of
group E in the NRS Social Grade. They are creative people who like to play instruments or create
art, they also enjoy going out with their friends and going to concerts and festivals. They dont use
very much social media apart from twitter and Instagram. Instagram is a much more creative type
of social media where you share photography. Most readers will own an iPhone and so will use text
messaging to talk to each other. !

!
QUESTION 5!
!

I attracted my audience to my magazine through the type of photography used, the clothing, props
and the content in my magazine. !

Models are wearing clothing that other young people would wear normally. The clothes are not
designer brands or unaffordable, ensuring that the reader can relate to the people in the magazine.
Brands that are recognisable are not expensive, such as vans and converse shoes and i think that
the majority of my readers would own at least one pair of either of these shoes. The models are
also not wearing much make - up making them look like normal people and not super glamorous
like in other glossy magazines. Location is just around the streets, with no lights or backdrop which
means its not very intimidating to the reader.!

Ive used simple language in my magazine because I want it to be relaxing to read and not hard
work for the reader. This magazine is for relaxation so the fonts are also very laid back and simple.
The colours used are pinks, whites and blacks. I used the colour pink to match with the artists hair
used on the front cover and dps. In other issues of the magazine, the colour pink would change to
another colour that suits the artist that the magazine is focusing on. !

There are also many interviews because from my questionnaires I saw that a big percentage
wanted to read interviews in a music magazine. !

The magazine supports upcoming artists as well. Articles about buskers and introducing a new
artist every week to widen the readers horizon of indie music. The magazine also has many
monthly reviews and suggestions for the readers on what new music to listen to that is indie. !

Some articles take place in other countries e.g new york to show the reader how indie music is
growing in different parts of the world. It also helps the reader be inspired to travel.!

!
QUESTION 6!
!

I used many different software and hardware deceives throughout this process. !

Overall, I used three different hardware devices. I used a Canon PowerShot G9 to take my pictures
for my music magazine and I used my iPhone 4 to take the pictures for my school magazine. I
used my MacBook Air which I used all the software programmes on. !

The Software programmes that I used on my MacBook Air were:!

- Keynote!
- Pages!
- Photoshop!
I used my MacBook Air to work at school and home because when I completed my preliminary task
on the school computers an Optilex 760, the computers were very slow and I would spend a really
long time waiting for things to load instead of doing work. In the preliminary task I used Microsoft
Word, Publisher and Excel and they were very slow on the school computers, so for creating my
magazine and evaluation, I used my MacBook.!

Photoshop skills:!
- To edit the images of Phoebe in photoshop I had several different steps to get my images look
the way I wanted them to. I duplicated the layer of the image and turn one of the layers black
and white and then changed the opacity of the black and white layer to 80%. I changed the
second layer to the filter soft light. Then to change Phoebe hair colour, I added another layer
and made the whole image more pink. Then I added a layer of black over the pink layer and
rubbed out Phoebes hair to reveal the pink layer underneath and make just her hair more pink
and not the whole image. !
- To add text, I used the text tool. !
- To insert images that Id already taken into my photoshop document I dragged the image onto
the photoshop icon at the bottom of the screen and pressed command + A, command + C and
then command + V into the document I wanted the image to be in. To cut out the pictures of Ella
I used the lasso tool to cut around her and then copied and pasted her onto the contents page.
To insert my polaroid pictures, I scanned them in and then used the magnetic lasso tool to cut
around them and then I copied and pasted them onto the contents page. !
- I drew the arrows on a separate piece of paper and then scanned them in and then copied and
pasted them into the contents page document. !
- To create the editorial pillars I used the rectangle tool and then chose what colour I wanted them
to be. !
- To create the converse logo at the bottom of the advert, I found the logo online and then
dragged it onto the advert. !
- I scanned the tape in and cut it out like I did with the arrows on the contents page. !

I used Keynote to analyse music magazine front covers, double page spreads and content pages. I
also used Prezi and Powtoon. I used Prezi in my preliminary task and I used Powtoon in my
evaluation for question four. !

On the school computers I used Microsoft Word to create the questionnaire that I handed out to
people for research on what people wanted to read about in a music magazine. I used the insert
tool to insert boxes for the open ended questions. I also inserted small square boxes for people to
tick. I used Microsoft Publisher to create my school magazine. I used the text tool to add text and
copied and pasted the images I wanted to use into publisher. !

I used Microsoft Excel to collect the results from my questionnaire and to create graphs from my
results. There is a detailed version of how I created these graphs in my blog diary under the entry
about making the graphs in excel. I added percentages to te graphs so it was clearer how different
the answers were. After making the graphs, I put them into a Powerpoint and analysed them. !

Websites used:!
- Powtoons!
- Prezi!
- Animoto!
- Weebly!

Powtoons allows you to create small videos that are similar to powerpoints, but you dont have to
press the next button because you can set each slide to a certain amount of time so that you know
how long to speak for. !

Prezi is similar to powerpoint as you can add images and text, but it is a lot more animated as
there are many different templates and shapes that you can use. !

Animoto is a quick slideshow of many different images that youve saved. This was really good for
showing different images that inspired me for the making of my music magazine. You can also add
music which adds a nice touch to the slideshow. To put it into my blog I embedded the video using
the embed code. !

I used Weebly to document all of my coursework. I added a blog diary where I can update what
Ive done in each lesson with a date and title. You can add images and text and embed videos into
the website. !

!
QUESTION 7!
!

On my preliminary task I didnt use any photoshop and used a website online to edit my photos. As
you can see I over-edited them and added too many filters, so you can barely see the actual image
or what it is. I used boxes to add my text and it looks really untidy and unprofessional. My music
magazine conforms much more to the conventions of a magazine, with more cover lines and the
barcode in the right place. I have a bigger masthead and used different fonts to make it look more
interesting. It looks a lot more professional than the preliminary task. !

The contents page also doesnt conform to the conventions of a double page spread as much as
my music magazine does. Ive used a really busy background of clouds which is completely
irrelevant to the school and arent even the school colours. The page numbers are on the wrong
side of the article and there arent many editorial pillars. I do have some images but theyre places
a big randomly on the page. My music magazine contents page is a lot more professional looking
with a clean white background and page numbers given with the images, which my preliminary
task does ot do. I have a lot more on the page and more articles, along with an editors note which
follows the conventions of a double page contents page much more than my preliminary task. I
also used photoshop edit and cut out images whereas for my preliminary task I used a website and
over-edited my images.
