Students will be able to identify some major factors that led to the Patriots
winning their independence as evidenced by their answers on the Social
Studies packet multiple choice questions.

Question students about the previous lesson. What were some of the roles
women played in the American Revolution? What choice did Native
Americans have regarding their support in the American Revolution?
Statement of Objective or Purpose:

Today we will look at some of the factors that led the Patriots to winning
their independence.
Sequence of Activities:

Question students about the previous lesson. What were some of the
roles women played in the American Revolution? What choice did Native
Americans have regarding their support in the American Revolution?
Have volunteers read paragraphs in book, page 174. Pause after the first
paragraph and ask Have you ever planned to do something that you
thought would be easy and found was harder than expected? Why was
the task much harder for the British than they assumed?
Have a volunteer read the rest of page 174. Pause to ask Do you think
independence is a cause worth fighting for? Why? Explain that freedom
is a synonym for independence.
Ask What is an ally?
Have a volunteer read page 175. Ask Why were Galvezs victories
important? What is a strategy? What are loyalists?
Assign packet page on lesson 5.

Questions to ask:

Conclusion and Summary:


Today we looked at some of the factors that led to the Patriots winning their
independence, including geography, allies, and strategies.
Self Evaluation and Reflection:
Todays lesson was one of the best so far this semester. The students offered
thoughtful responses to the questions, and I was impressed with their ability
to have differing opinions on whether independence was worth fighting for in
the context of losing their own families safety. I also felt like the students
gave me respect, which helped tremendously.
