Observation Task 6:

Managing Behavior and Increasing Motivation with


Rewards and Awards
Focus:
To recognize various techniques teachers use for motivating students and rewarding
good behavior.

Objective
The objective of this task is for student teachers to begin to understand the
different strategies teachers use to motivate students and encourage good
behavior.

Task
Teachers use various reward systems to reward individual behavior or the
whole group behavior. This may done several times throughout the day or
at the end of the day/week/ etc. in the classroom. Identify the different
rewards (good behavior recognition) systems your teacher and specialist
teachers use.

Awards
Awards are a bit different from rewards. Awards are for things like student
of the week, best reader, superstar speller, etc. The awards can be in
the form of a certificate or listed somewhere in the classroom. They are
usually for an accomplishment that a student has achieved or for doing
something well. They are usually many different awards so that each child
has a chance to earn one. In the case of student of the week, everyone
gets to be the center of attention.

1. REWARDS:
This week, please observe a child with good consistently good behavior
and one with not so good behavior. Watch for their reactions when
either they are rewarded or not rewarded. Think about whether the
reward system is effective for encouraging good behavior. Write a
paragraph about your observations.
2. AWARDS
Talk to two students who have recently received awards. Find out what
they were for and ask the students how they felt when they got the
awards.

Reflection
Giving rewards to encourage good behavior is very controversial.
That means that there are two sides to this behavior management
strategy.
Some teachers think using rewards is a bad thing because they feel
that the child only behaves to get a prize. So when there is no
prize(or reward), they wont behave. This is called EXTRINSIC
motivation. The motivation comes from outside the preson.
Other teachers think that a child should do well and behave because
it is the right thing. That good behavior is something that we
should do naturally and should not be rewarded for it. This is called
INTRINSIC motivation. The motivation comes from inside the person.

What can the teacher do to make sure that all children get
rewarded from time to time?
What kinds of awards did you receive as a student?
What is your opinion about awarding children for
accomplishments?

Observation:
Many teacher are using reward system with their children as
my MST doing and that effect so positively on the
children,because children like reward and praises. For
example there is a girl this week who helped her friends to
stand from 1 to 20 and the teacher was so happy about what
she did and how she be responsible and organized the all
class by herself without teacher support .Teacher ask other
children to clap them hands for her by Khalifa tower clap
which mean they raise them hands up them heads and clap.
The girl was so happy and proud.While they were two boys
who fight with each other at playing time about who will
stand first at the line,and the teacher punished them by

prevented them for five minutes from them lunch time and
other five from their class activities which they really love to
do It .At Wednesday they had art class and the teacher
asked children to draw volcano while they are listening to
music and draw what they hear.After all she aske art star for
the last week to choose another two great paints to give the
two children art star sertifetic.They choosed and she gave
them,children were so happy and decided to tell them
parents about It.

Reflection:
Almost people think rewared system is the most best aspect to
use for students,because It encourage them and motivate them
to do more and more.And most of parents agreed that,because
they see them children improve when they gave a reward they
want,and the best rewared for them is educational games such as
drawing books,stories for characters them love,and puzzle to
learn more and let them brains thinking and imagine many
aspects.Children feel so happy and proud when them parents
rewared them and improve them skills.And other parents
disagreed with rewared system,because they think children
should do the thing from inside him without any certain from
anyone.And they should encourage themselves and inspire
themselves by a person they see him as ideal in them

life.Children also in this way feel proud ,because they like to feel
like they are the point and no one around them just them.And
that motivate them to improve and do more.I like rewared
system,because I like to have a gift from some aspect I do hard
and very well.Because It let me feel so happy to improve and
think about new ideas.
